It is no secret that plenty of excellent players remain unsigned in free agency. With that in mind, the MLBPA is preparing their own Spring Training.

Even though there have been some moves lately in free agency, there are still over 100 players left unsigned. This slow free agency period has led to some bad blood between the owners and the MLBPA, with agents grumbling about collusion. Meanwhile, prices do not appear to be dropping, leaving these players unsigned as Spring Training rapidly approaches.

With that problem in mind, the MLBPA has come up with a temporary solution. They have made plans for their own Spring Training, set to open on February 14. This way, players can continue to get in shape for the season, as they wait for that phone call to come in.

Those preparations are starting to flesh out. The free agent Spring Training will take place at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Former manager Bo Porter will be in charge of the camp, and personal trainers will not be permitted. The MLBPA will arrange travel and housing, while the camp is expected to continue through March 4. It is certainly a great opportunity for players to stay in, or get closer to, baseball shape.

However, not every free agent will be involved. Scott Boras has announced that his clients will not be attending, as he would prefer to rely upon his, and his clients, finances and trainers to be ready when a team submits what is considered an acceptable contract.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this free agent Spring Training. Should some of these players look to be in midseason form already, they could get that awaited phone call. Likewise, if they struggle or show up out of shape, whatever offers are out there could disappear.
