Coming to America made its debut in 1988, one showcasing the talents of comedian Eddie Murphy — and is making a comeback, of sorts, three decades later. The “sequel” known as “Coming to Fresno” will honor the film on June 21 in epic fashion.
It’s unknown if Murphy himself will attend this event, but Akeem Joffer, the prince of “Zamunda,” should consider gracing the stadium with his presence. However, the Grizzlies are going all out in their homage to Coming to America, even in the fine details of the event.
The Grizzlies are adopting the name of the Zamunda Lions, in tribute of the fictional nation of Zamunda, where Murphy’s character Prince Joffer hails from in the movie. The attire will even include the flag of Zamunda, with Fresno’s flag complimenting it, as well — a nice one-two punch.
The staff in Fresno isn’t stopping with the uniforms, where they will open up a McDowells for the game. The inspiration for the fast food chain shown in Coming to America is a copy of McDonald’s, but the owner wiggles his way around it. This establishment is where the Prince gets a job when he comes to America.
"See, they’re McDonald’s… I’m McDowell’s. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds."
