Miami Marlins Rumors: J.T. Realmuto asking price getting too high
The Miami Marlins are shopping catcher J.T. Realmuto. A high asking price may ruin their chances to deal him away.
In any type of business, it’s important to know the value of your product. When it comes to MLB trades, valuing a player properly is essential.
According to the latest Miami Marlins rumors, Derek Jeter and company may have incorrectly assessed catcher J.T. Realmuto.
The worst kept secret in baseball is the fact that the Marlins are trying to deal Realmuto. He has gone public, requesting a boarding pass out of Miami. No trade has come to fruition. Likely, it’s because the Marlins are asking for too much in return from the other teams.
Asking price from the Washington Nationals
From a previous whisper, the asking price the Miami Marlins had requested from the Washington Nationals includes Victor Robles or Juan Soto. As the number one and two prospects in the Nationals’ system, they carry a lot of value.
The Nationals may still have interest in Realmuto but at a fraction of the cost. As previously suggested, number three prospect Carter Kieboom could headline a Realmuto trade instead.
Whether or not Kieboom was offered remains unknown. What we do know is that the two sides have yet to agree fully on anything.
Asking price from the Houston Astros
Most recently, the 2017 World Series Champions inquired about what it would cost to land Realmuto. The response from the Marlins: outfielder Kyle Tucker.
Tucker is a top MLB prospect. If recent history is any hint, Houston is not willing to trade away its best prospects in the winter, if at all. Last summer we did see them part with a few names to land Justin Verlander. In the end, they did benefit.

In this situation, the circumstances are different. The Astros would like to have Realmuto. They don’t need him, though. With Brian McCann and Evan Gattis already on the roster and plenty of cheaper options available, it’s not logical to trade Tucker for Realmuto.
What’s a fairer price?
Realmuto is certainly a talented enough player to bring back a top 100 prospect. Asking for Soto from the Nationals is fair. Washington is desperate for a catcher upgrade. Thinking they can get Robles or Tucker is a reach so far it could overextend even the most limber of shoulders.
From the Nationals, a package with Kieboom as the headliner and one or two other lesser prospects is fair. From the Astros, Yordan Alvarez is the best the Marlins could get.

In order to successfully land a trade partner, the Miami Marlins must consider the market they are dealing with. It’s a low one and the need for catchers isn’t too great. Maybe midseason the story will change. Right now, a top 30 prospect is likely out of the question.
