Kansas City Royals reward World Series hero Lucas Duda
It has taken a little over two years, but the Kansas City Royals have rewarded another one of their World Series heroes.
The Kansas City Royals had a number of unlikely heroes during their run to the World Series in 2015. From Alcides Escobar leading off Game One with an inside the park homer to Christian Colon coming through with a clutch base hit in his only postseason plate appearance, the Royals run through the postseason seemed to be filled with players making the most of their opportunity.
While most of the players that made the Royals postseason magical have already been rewarded, there were a few that had yet to receive proper recognition. One of those slights has been rectified, as the Royals have rewarded first baseman/outfielder Lucas Duda by signing him to a one year contract. He will earn $3.5 million this year, with a chance at another $500,000 in incentives.

Entertainingly, Duda is signing to replace the very person who scored in Game Five to change the course of the World Series clinching contest. With Eric Hosmer on third, Salvador Perez hit a weak grounder to the left of third, with David Wright throwing to Duda to get the out at first. Once the ball left Wright’s hand, Hosmer sprinted home, scoring as Duda’s throw was wide, letting the tying run score in what would eventually be a 12 inning victory.
Now, Duda has the unenviable task of attempting to replace Hosmer in the lineup. Hosmer was a fan favorite for his excellent defense and bat, leaving some large shoes to fill.
In the end, Duda is essentially serving as a bridge. The future at the position, now that Hosmer departed, appears to be Nick Pratto. However, he is still a couple of years, at the least, away from the majors. Duda, if nothing else, can be a solid insurance policy in the outfield, and take over at first for this season.
