Colorado Rockies still maintaining contact with Mark Reynolds

DENVER, CO - SEPTEMBER 5: Mark Reynolds

The Colorado Rockies are staying in touch with their former first baseman Mark Reynolds, even if they have yet to make an offer.

It would make sense that the Colorado Rockies would be interested in their former first baseman Mark Reynolds. He had resurrected his career in Colorado, once again becoming that feared power hitter he had been. Over the past two years, Reynolds produced a .274/.354/.471 batting line, hitting 46 doubles and 44 homers. He still struck out at a high rate, with 287 strikeouts in 1034 plate appearances, but Reynolds had reestablished himself as a slugger once again.

Yet, as has been the case with quite a few free agents this offseason, the phone has not rung for Reynolds. Meanwhile, as he is still waiting for an opportunity, the Rockies have maintained contact with the first baseman, presumably looking at him as a fallback option.

More from Call to the Pen

At this point, the Rockies have not yet made a contract offer. However, it would make sense that they would keep tabs on Reynolds. Currently, Ryan McMahon is atop the Colorado depth chart at first, with Ian Desmond as the theoretical backup. McMahon had struggled in his brief callup last year, with three hits in his 24 plate appearances. He did display a solid batting eye, however, drawing five walks.

The question that the Rockies have to answer is whether or not they feel McMahon is ready to be a starter in the majors. He has performed well thus far in Spring Training, with seven hits, including three doubles, in the early going.

Should McMahon struggle later in the spring, it is possible that the Rockies revisit their interest in Reynolds manifests into an offer. Reynolds could end up coming in on a one year deal, serving as a bridge until McMahon is ready to take over at first.
