New York Mets David Wright has yet another setback

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 22: David Wright
NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 22: David Wright

As Bad Religion once said, there comes a time for a man to walk away. New York Mets third baseman David Wright should take the hint.

There was a time when David Wright was a star with the New York Mets. He appeared to be a future Hall of Famer, a seven time All Star and two time Gold Glove winner in his age 30 season. With his impressive blend of power and speed, and in the midst of his theoretical prime, his future seemed bright indeed.

And then, the injuries kept in. His power and speed completely disappeared in 2014, and then Wright was unable to get back on the diamond. Since the start of 2015, he has played just 75 games, missing all of the 2017 campaign. Yet, through all those injuries and various setbacks, Wright was intent on returning to the Mets.

Those plans took another hit on Monday. After dealing with soreness in his back and shoulder, Wright was examined in Los Angeles by Dr. Robert Watkins, who recommended that the oft injured third baseman not partake in any baseball activities for another eight weeks.

At this point in time, it is fair to wonder if Wright is ever going to get back on the diamond. he has not played a single major league game since May 27, 2016, when he was 1-4 with a solo homer. Since then, Wright has appeared in just three minor league games, before having yet another setback in his quest to return to the Mets.

At this point, it is more than fair to wonder if Wright is going to ever return to the diamond. One certainly has to admire his persistence and determination to make an impact upon the Mets, but it is obvious that they cannot count on him. Even New York has come to that conclusion, signing Todd Frazier to a two year deal to take over at third.

It is understandable that Wright would want to leave the game on his terms. After all, no one wants to be pushed out the door, especially when it comes to a game that they still love. However, at this point, his body just cannot handle the rigors of being a professional baseball player. Wright has had a good career, but it appears to be over.
