New York Yankees: What will happen at third base when Brandon Drury returns?

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 6: Brandon Drury

With Brandon Drury having figured out the cause of his blurred vision, what will happen to Miguel Andujar when Drury returns to the New York Yankees lineup?

The New York Yankees are getting a glimpse of their future today with top prospect Gleyber Torres making his major league debut. He’ll join Miguel Andujar, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Tyler Austin as prospects who’ve come up through the system and join players like Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks who were acquired via trade as a part of GM Brian Cashman’s master plan to rebuild the New York Yankees and remain competitive.

Another piece they acquired during spring training was Brandon Drury. Drury was brought in to give some more competition at third and won the job. However, Drury finally admitted to blurred vision, something he had been dealing with for years. Now, he’s figured out the cause, an irritated tendon running up his neck into his head.

Drury may be just a few days away from going out on a rehab assignment.

“He’s got to continue to progress,” Boone said. “But I think he’s very, very close to making a decision one way or the other whether we want to send him out (on a rehab assignment) and start getting a couple of games in and some at-bats. I do think that decision is potentially really close. Again, hopefully he just gets through these next couple days and we’re in that position.”

The New York Yankees gave Andujar a chance with Drury sidelined and after struggling at first, Andujar has started to get it going at the plate. In his last seven games, Andujar is hitting .321 with a 1.131 OPS and has looked much more relaxed at the plate.

Drury has positional versatility, but when the New York Yankees acquired him, they viewed him more for third base. If Andujar continues to hit, what can they do? They could move Andujar over to first with Tyler Austin until Greg Bird gets back, but would this mean they get rid of Neil Walker if everyone is healthy? If Walker continues to not hit, that may be the option.

The New York Yankees are going have an interesting roster crunch coming up shortly if everyone is healthy with Drury’s return and Torres arrival. The Cashman plan is starting to come together, now they have to figure out how to manipulate the roster.
