NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 22: Gleyber Torres

At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a new daily piece into our collection each morning with all of the night’s scores at every level of the majors and minors, along with a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.

Without further adieu, let’s begin!

MLB Scores

New York Yankees 5, Toronto Blue Jays 1 in New York – Luis Severino pitched a beauty and Didi Gregorius homered as top prospect Gleyber Torres made his MLB debut in the Yankees win.

Cleveland Indians 7, Baltimore Orioles 3 in Baltimore – Manny Machado hit a pair of home runs to tie for the MLB lead with 8, but Jose Ramirez matched him with a pair of his own as the Indians won in Baltimore.

Kansas City Royals 8, Detroit Tigers 5 in Detroit – The Royals hit 3 home runs and got 4 innings without an earned run from their bullpen to steal a victory after Detroit jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning.

Tampa Bay Rays 8, Minnesota Twins 6 in Tampa Bay – Carlos Gomez hit a walk-off home run against his former team to break up a 6-6 tie for the Rays win.

Philadelphia Phillies 3, Pittsburgh Pirates 2 in Philadelphia – It took 11 innings, but the Phillies got the Sunday win over their in-state NL rivals after a review left Andrew Knapp on third base rather than with a walk-off home run. No worries, as Aaron Altherr singled him home one out later for the winning run.

Houston Astros 7, Chicago White Sox 1 in Chicago – The Astros blew open a tie ball game in the 7th inning with 5 runs to take the win as both young hurlers, Lance McCullers, Jr. and Reynaldo Lopez, were excellent.

Milwaukee Brewers 4, Miami Marlins 2 in Milwaukee – Junior Guerra gave up a first inning run, but then shut down the Marlins as Milwaukee defense was the cause of both Marlins runs on the game. Marlins starter Caleb Smith was no slouch, though, striking out 10 over 6 innings.

St. Louis Cardinals 9, Cincinnati Reds 2 in St. Louis – The Cardinals jumped out strong early, got a solid start from Miles Mikolas, and coasted to a Sunday victory over the Reds, defeating Cincy’s ace, Luis Castillo.

Texas Rangers 7, Seattle Mariners 4 in Texas – The Rangers used a 3-run 4th to jump out to an early 4-0 lead that the Mariners could not overcome as Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo each hit a home run.

Chicago Cubs 9, Colorado Rockies 7 in Colorado – The Cubs scored 3 runs in the first on their way to a victory, but the big story was losing star third baseman Kris Bryant after he was hit in the head with a German Marquez pitch.

Oakland Athletics 4, Boston Red Sox 1 in Oakland – Khris Davis drove in all four runs as the A’s once again stifled the hot Boston bats, striking out 10 Red Sox hitters on the day as a staff.

Arizona Diamondbacks 4, San Diego Padres 2 in Arizona – The teams only scored in two half-innings as D-backs starter Patrick Corbin picked up his 4th win on the season and Christian Villanueva hit his 7th home run in an impressive start to the season.

San Francisco Giants 4, Los Angeles Angels 2 in Los Angeles – The Giants used a 3-run 3rd inning to take the win over the Angels in Shohei Ohtani’s first game in the cleanup spot in the lineup. Johnny Cueto was dominant on the day, striking out 7 over 6 innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers 4, Washington Nationals 3 in Los Angeles – The Dodgers used a 3-run 6th to overcome a 3-0 deficit and won with a run in the next inning as the Dodgers won on Sunday Night Baseball over the Nationals.

Standouts

While two other players had a 2-home run day, Washington’s Michael A. Taylor had a big game in a losing effort as the Nationals fell to the Dodgers. Taylor went 3-3 with a double, home run, a pair of runs, a walk, and 2 stolen bases on his big day.

As he comes off one of his worst seasons in recent years, Johnny Cueto is out to show he is still the elite pitcher he was once assumed to be. Sunday was no different, as Cueto went 6 innings against the Angels, allowing no runs, giving up 2 hits on 2 walks, striking out 7!
