LOS ANGELES, CA – APRIL 23: Walker Buehler /

As the MLB season pushes into warming weather across the country, a handful of intriguing matchups of West division teams take center stage, including young fireballer Walker Buehler’s starting debut.

At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a new daily piece into our collection each morning with all of the night’s scores at every level of the majors and minors, along with a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.

Without further adieu, let’s begin!

MLB Scores

New York Yankees 14, Minnesota Twins 1 in New York – The Yankees put up 3 runs in the first and never gave up the lead, though a 9-run 7th and 8th made the score appear much worse than it was throughout the majority of the game. Giancarlo Stanton led four Yankees to home run, going 4-4 on the night.

Cleveland Indians 2, Baltimore Orioles 1 in Baltimore – All the scoring in the game took place in the 2nd inning in what turned out to otherwise be a classic pitchers’ duel between Carlos Carrasco and Kevin Gausman.

Chicago White Sox 10, Seattle Mariners 4 in Chicago – The White Sox jumped all over Seattle starter Mike Leake for 5 runs in the first inning and never let up as young second baseman Yoan Moncada ended up a double shy of the cycle on the night.

Cincinnati Reds 10, Atlanta Braves 4 in Cincinnati – Pulled after his first real mistake of the game, Mike Foltynewicz pitched an excellent game, but the bullpen handed the Reds 8 runs. While Scott Schebler had a big day at the plate, most memorable from this game was watching Joey Votto strike out – looking!

Oakland Athletics 9, Texas Rangers 4 in Texas – The A’s continue to be one of the hottest teams in MLB, winning their third straight game on Monday over their division rival behind a 9th inning offensive explosion for 6 runs to break open a 3-3 tie ballgame.

San Diego Padres 13, Colorado Rockies 5 in Colorado – The Rockies and Padres both came out firing, each scoring 4 runs in the first inning, but the Padres still had a 9-spot in the holster saved up for the 7th inning to blow the game wide open. Carlos Asuaje hit a big home run early on, and Franchy Cordero hit a bomb in the big 7th run inning for the Padres.

San Francisco Giants 4, Washington Nationals 2 in San Francisco – Mac Williamson hit one of the most impressive home runs of the MLB season in the 6th inning to put the Giants ahead for good and back starter Chris Stratton to his second win on the season.

Los Angeles Angels 2, Houston Astros 0 in Houston – Previewed in yesterday’s piece as the game to watch due to the pitching matchup, and the pitching did not disappoint. Tyler Skaggs and Gerrit Cole were nails for 7 innings apiece with the Angels able to make more out of their 4 hits off of Cole than the Astros did with their 4 off of Skaggs.

Los Angeles Dodgers 2, Miami Marlins 1 in Los Angeles – He did not get the win on the night, but Walker Buehler shined in his first work from a MLB rotation, firing 5 scoreless innings. He needed all of it, as Marlins starter Jarlin Garcia was tough as well, going 6 innings, and allowing just a single run.

Standouts

Mired in a season-long roller coaster of performance, Giancarlo Stanton had another peak on Monday with a 4-hit game, including a big home run for the Yankees against the Twins. Yankees fans (and MLB fans in general) hope he can find his consistent power stroke again.

In order to defeat Houston on Monday with Gerrit Cole taking the hill for the Astros, Angels starter Tyler Skaggs was going to have to be tremendous, and he was up to the task. Skaggs posted the highest game score of any starter in MLB on the night, going 7 innings of shutout ball, striking out 3.

Tuesday’s Game to Watch

Young ace meets old ace as the Minnesota Twins come into Yankee Stadium with a young, exciting team ready to compete in the American League Central but need to prove they can play with the stalwarts of the American League, the Bronx Bombers. Jose Berrios, the Twins young righty, will square off against veteran lefty CC Sabathia of the Yankees in a 6:35 pm EDT tilt.
