The Seattle Mariners have acquired lefty Roenis Elias from the Boston Red Sox for…?
This is the question we’re left asking after today’s roster move. The 29-year-old Cuban was moved out west for cash consideration or a player to be named later. I’ve always been curious what a trade call of this nature sounds like. How do the Seattle Mariners ask for him? Do the Boston Red Sox really not care what they get in return for Roenis Elias?
It seems that way, doesn’t it? It’s almost like the Boston Red Sox are dropping the dead weight.
While many PTBNL have ended up being stars (David Ortiz comes to mind), it’s more likely than not that the cash considerations will be what Boston gets in return.
Roenis Elias isn’t a very impressive MLB pitcher, going 15-21 through 55 appearances while posting a 4.20 ERA. However, so far this year with Pawtucket he has a 1.23 ERA. It’s also been a couple of years since he’s been a consistent presence in the Majors.
He only posted one game in 2017 and three games in 2016. In 2015, he played in 22 games with the Seattle Mariners. It’ll be somewhat of a homecoming for Roenis Elias, as he got his start with the Seattle Mariners.
For Roenis Elias, it’s a chance to start over. He apparently hasn’t been given an opportunity in Boston, and he’s getting older every day. Perhaps the Seattle Mariners give him the innings that he wants in MLB. Time will tell what comes of the trade, both for the team acquiring him and the team giving him away.

While it always hurts for players to be traded away with no idea of who they’re being traded for, Roenis Elias can look on the bright side of playing for his former team, and having a new opportunity in Seattle.
