Jenny Cavnar became the first woman in twenty-five years to do play-by-play for the Colorado Rockies. How did she do?
Colorado Rockies fans were greeted with a pleasant surprise when they turned on the game on Monday night. Rather than hearing the usual play-by-play announcer, they were treated to longtime MLB analyst Jenny Cavnar.
Jenny Cavnar is the first woman to do play-by-play for an MLB game in 25 years, and frankly, it was long overdue.
Jenny Cavnar did an excellent job in the booth for the Colorado Rockies, keeping the game entertaining even though the Colorado Rockies lost big to the San Diego Padres 13-5. She even was able to debut her homerun call for Nolan Arenado’s first inning left field bomb.
“Fire up the fountains, she’s gone!” might be one of my favorite home run calls I’ve ever heard. The support she received from the booth was incredible. Indeed, a special moment for Jenny and all of us.
The largest test of the night for Jenny Cavnar came in the seventh inning, when the San Diego Padres scored nine runs. The game was beyond salvageable for the Colorado Rockies, yet the rookie play-by-play announcer kept fans interested and tuned in, telling stories of her 12 years covering the league.

Jenny Cavnar will have a few more opportunities throughout the year as the regular play-by-play announcer takes games off to coach his son’s high school baseball team. For me, those games will be must-watch TV, regardless of the teams playing. Whether 1-0 in the bottom of the tenth or 15-2 in the top of the third, so long as Jenny Canvar is calling the game, I will be tuning in to watch. You should consider doing the same.
