As the MLB season closes out the month of April, we look at the Minnesota Twins and their continued misery against the New York Yankees, the first home run of Ronald Acuna, and more!
At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a new daily piece into our collection each morning with all of the night’s scores at every level of the majors and minors, along with a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
MLB Scores
New York Yankees 4, Minnesota Twins 3 in New York – The Minnesota Twins have a lengthy history of having big-time losses in New York, and Thursday was no different, as Kyle Gibson no-hit the Yankees into the sixth inning, but Gary Sanchez was able to walk off the Yankees with a win on a 3-run home run off Twins closer Fernando Rodney.
Tampa Bay Rays 9, Baltimore Orioles 5 in Baltimore – Tampa Bay came out strong, scoring 2 runs in each of the first three innings, and Chris Archer battled through not having his best stuff for the Rays to get the victory.
Arizona Diamondbacks 8, Philadelphia Phillies 2 in Philadelphia – Arizona jumped out with 3 runs in the first inning, and they simply kept at it, adding another 5 runs in the 3rd inning. The Diamondbacks hit three home runs in their rout.
Boston Red Sox 5, Toronto Blue Jays 4 in Toronto – In spite of the Jays scoring each of the first three innings, the Red Sox used a 3-run 5th to take the win and support ace Chris Sale.
Seattle Mariners 5, Cleveland Indians 4 in Cleveland – The Mariners got a great start from James Paxton, shutting down the Indians, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead, requiring an 8th inning run.
St. Louis Cardinals 4, New York Mets 3, 13 innings in St. Louis – A true back-and-forth affair saw the game tied at 2 after 9, each team score a run in the 10th, and the Cardinals finally score in the 13th to win. The game was highlighted in this space yesterday, and the two starters gave it all they had, combining for just 2 earned runs allowed over 13 1/3 innings between them.
Chicago White Sox 6, Kansas City 3 in Kansas City – Lucas Giolito has struggled mightily this season with his command after an incredible spring training. He wasn’t dominating on Thursday, but he held the Royals down well enough to give the White Sox the opportunity to win behind 4 home runs from his teammates.
Pittsburgh Pirates 1, Detroit Tigers 0 in Pittsburgh – Ivan Nova and Michael Fulmer squared off for a great pitchers’ duel, with the Pirates finally scoring their run on a 1-out walk-off home run by Chris Dickerson.
Chicago Cubs 1, Milwaukee Brewers 0 in Chicago – A Kyle Schwarber home run was the only run of the entire game as Chase Anderson and Kyle Hendricks both pitched excellent games.
Atlanta Braves 7, Cincinnati Reds 4 in Cincinnati – The Atlanta Braves youth was served as the two youngest players in the MLB, Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna, each hit a home run as the Braves salvaged a series split in Cincinnati.
Standouts
In just his second professional game, Ronald Acuna, Jr. displayed his incredible raw power after showing off incredibly elite speed in his first game. He went 3-4 on Thursday, with a double and home run, scoring a pair of runs and driving in 2.
In a pitchers’ duel on Thursday in Pittsburgh, Ivan Nova came out with the best performance of the day, tossing 8 scoreless innings, allowing 6 hits and no walks, striking out 5.
