As the MLB season closes out the month of April, we have the Oakland Athletics Sean Manaea dominating hitters, Yu Darvish throwing an eephus, and more!
At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a new daily piece into our collection each morning with all of the night’s scores at every level of the majors and minors, along with a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
MLB Scores
Cincinnati Reds 15, Minnesota Twins 9 in Minnesota – The Twins and Reds combined for 24 runs, 36 hits, and 49 baserunners in a huge offensive explosion for both teams.
Tampa Bay Rays 4, Boston Red Sox 3 in Boston – The Rays jumped on Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz as Blake Snell kept the Red Sox at bay. The Rays got three home runs from their hitters.
Arizona Diamondbacks 5, Washington Nationals 4 in Washington – Arizona struck first, the Nationals struck back harder, but the Diamondbacks bats simply kept at it, scoring again in the 4th and then in the 6th to take the win in the series opener as elite arms Zack Godley and Stephen Strasburg both struggled in the game.
Texas Rangers 6, Toronto Blue Jays 4 in Toronto – The Rangers scored 4 runs in the first inning, but after the Blue Jays clawed back, the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the 6th inning.
Cleveland Indians 6, Seattle Mariners 5 in Cleveland – The Indians put up a 6-spot to support ace Corey Kluber, who held the Mariners scoreless for the first 6 innings of the game as the Indians picked up a victory at home.
Pittsburgh Pirates 6, St. Louis Cardinals 5, 11 innings in Pittsburgh – The Pirates scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings, where they finally walked off in the 11th inning after Starling Marte drove in the winning run with 2 outs.
Chicago White Sox 7, Kansas City 4 in Kansas City, 11 innings – The Royals scored first then needed a 2-run burst to send the game into extra innings. The White Sox scored 3 runs in the top of the 11th to seel the victory.
Baltimore Orioles 6, Detroit Tigers 0 in Baltimore – The Orioles stopped a rough patch behind an excellent performance from an unlikely source as Chris Tillman hurled 7 scoreless innings, and his ERA still sat over 7 after that performance!
Chicago Cubs 3, Milwaukee Brewers 2 in Chicago – The Brewers put up a run in the first, but the Cubs scored two in the bottom of the first, and when the Brewers scored again in the 7th, the Cubs took the lead right back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Yu Darvish had an excellent start, even flashing a 64-MPH “eephus” curve to get a strikeout.
Atlanta Braves 7, Philadelphia Phillies 4 in Philadelphia – Both teams put up 3 runs in the first inning, but from there, Phillies starter Aaron Nola took charge of the game, dominating the pace of the game from that point forward while he was on the mound while Braves starter Julio Teheran left with an injury. Ozzie Albies stole home in a crazy first inning.
Colorado Rockies 1, Miami Marlins 0 in Miami – An incredible pitchers’ duel appropriately saw the only run scored driven in by one of the men on the mound as the Marlins and Rockies combined for 13 hits, but could not push runners across the plate.
Oakland Athletics 8, Houston Astros 1 in Houston – Sean Manaea followed up his no-hitter with another dominant start, and the A’s offense took off after the 5th inning, leading to an Athletics win.
New York Yankees 4, Los Angeles Angels 3, 10 innings, in Los Angeles – Shohei Ohtani took Luis Severino deep, but then left with an injury as the Angels and Yankees played like two heavyweight fighters going back and forth until the Yankees in the 9th to tie and again in the 10th and then shut the door on the Angels for the win.
New York Mets 5, San Diego Padres 1 in San Diego – Jacob deGrom absolutely dominated the Padres lineup into the 8th inning, and Asdrubel Cabrera led the offense as the Mets turned around a recent losing streak.
San Francisco Giants 6, Los Angeles Dodgers 4 in San Francisco – The Dodgers were able to muster a 4-spot in the 4th inning and take a lead into the late innings, but once again, what was a strength in the dominant 2017 Dodgers failed them as the bullpen allowed 4 runs in the 7th inning, handing the Giants the victory.
Standouts
He’s at times only had a single hit in the game, so he hasn’t even appeared on the “other hitters” portion in each game of the streak, but Joey Votto hit a home run in his fourth consecutive game Friday night. Overall, the veteran Reds leader went 3-3 at the plate with 2 runs scored, an RBI, 2 walks, a hit by pitch, a double, and a home run.
Chris Tillman had an ugly 2017, and his 2018 season hasn’t been much better, but Friday was an example of why the Baltimore Orioles still send him out every fifth day as he spun 7 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two walks, striking out 5.
