The New York Yankees have won 17 of 18 and climbed into first place in the AL East along with much, much, more in today’s Relief Roundup

At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a new daily piece into our collection each morning with all of the night’s scores at every level of the majors and minors, along with a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.

Without further adieu, let’s begin!

MLB Scores

Cincinnati Reds 2, New York Mets 1, 10 innings in Cincinnati Reds – The Reds took home a win with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning by Adam Duvall. Sal Romano of the Reds and Zack Wheeler of the Mets had an excellent pitchers’ duel on the day, with both going 6 innings and striking out 7.

Cleveland Indians 6, Milwaukee Brewers 2 in Milwaukee – The Indians put up 4 runs in the 4th inning on Junior Guerra, and Carlos Carrasco was brilliant for Cleveland, going the distance and striking out 14.

Texas Rangers 5, Detroit Tigers 4, 10 innings in Texas – Nomar Mazara hit two home runs, the final one the deciding tally in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Rangers defeated the Tigers.

Pittsburgh Pirates 6, Chicago White Sox 5 in Chicago – The Pirates trailed all game long on the road before erupting in the 9th inning off White Sox reliever Nate Jones for 4 runs to take the win.

Chicago Cubs 13, Miami Marlins 4 in Chicago – The Cubs offense exploded for an 8-run 3rd inning to back starter Jose Quintana, who pitched very well over 6 innings, allowing just 1 run.

Los Angeles Angels 8, Colorado Rockies 0 in Colorado – Young Angels starter Jaime Barria was able to shut down the Rockies for 5 1/3 scoreless innings while the offense provided 3 home runs in support as the Angels cruised to a road win.

Houston Astros 4, Oakland Astros 1 in Oakland – Gerrit Cole continued his impressive season for the Astros, shutting down the Astros over 6 innings, striking out 9 while the Astros put up a pair of runs in the 7th and 8th innings each after Daniel Mengden spun 6 shutout innings.

New York Yankees 9, Boston Red Sox 6 in New York – A great example of the rivalry between the two teams, the Yankees and Red Sox had 5 lead changes over the game on Wednesday as the Yankees put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning after Craig Kimbrel had to be warmed up in a hurry for the Red Sox and couldn’t hold a rapidly evaporating lead that reliever Matt Barnes had already deteriorated before Kimbrel entered the game. The win was the New York Yankees 17th in their past 18 games and moved them into first place in the American League East.

Baltimore Orioles 5, Kansas City Royals 3 in Kansas City – The Orioles brought in a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th after the Royals tied up the game in the 6th inning.

Philadelphia Phillies 11, San Francisco Giants 3 in Philadelphia – The Phillies had a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the 6th inning and then blew the game wide open with 6 in the bottom of the inning in support of young starter Nick Pivetta.

Toronto Blue Jays 5, Seattle Mariners 2 in Toronto – Starters Wade LeBlanc and Jaime Garcia spun two excellent ballgames, but the Blue Jays exploded on the Seattle bullpen in the bottom of the 8th inning for 4 runs for the win.

Atlanta Braves 5, Tampa Bay Rays 2 in Tampa Bay – The Braves jumped out early on the Rays to continue their hot play on the road, moving to 13-7 on the road on the season aas Julio Teheran moved his record to 3-1.

San Diego Padres 2, Washington Nationals 1 in San Diego – Two solid pitching performances from Joey Lucchesi and Gio Gonzalez led to the game being tied at 1 apiece going into the bullpens, when the Padres pushed across a run in the 7th inning to pull out the tight win.

Los Angeles Dodgers 6, Arizona Diamondbacks 3 in Los Angeles – The Dodgers leaned on their bullpen and got a good performance on this night after having struggles throughout the season in defeating the Diamondbacks

Standouts

The Cubs offense was led by two standouts on Wednesday in their defeat of the Marlins. Catcher Willson Contreras showed off his athleticism with two triples as well as a double, scoring two runs and driving in one. Anthony Rizzo cleaned up the bases, going 3-5 with a pair of doubles, a home run, and 5 RBI.

Carlos Carrasco was absolutely brilliant on Wednesday, spinning a complete game for the Indians, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk, striking out 14.

Birthdays today

While there are no Hall of Fame players born on this day, there is one member of the Hall of Fame born today, Hall of Fame manager/GM Ed Barrow, born on this day 150 years ago!

Barrow was a manager and a scout around the turn of the century (which was typically one in the same). He left managing to run minor leagues in an administrative role for multiple seasons before becoming the manager of the Boston Red Sox in 1918. He won the World Series his first season at the helm before leaving when owner Harry Frazee began selling off star players. Famously, Barrow made the decision to have Babe Ruth do more than just pitch by putting him in the outfield on days he was not on the mound.

Barrow followed Ruth to the Yankees, where he was arguably the most influential General Manager in the game’s history, running from 1921 to 1944. He established one of the most envied farm systems in all of baseball. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953 and passed away later that same year.

Active MLB players born today: Pierce Johnson, JaCoby Jones, Salvador Perez, AJ Reed, Lucas Sims

Notable events on this day

In spite of being under contract with a team in San Francisco, Pud Galvin wires the Buffalo Bisons in 1880 on this day to accept their contract.

The first ever back-to-back-to-back home runs occurred on this day in 1894 for the St. Louis Browns as Frank Shugart, George Miller, and Heinie Peitz all hit a homer. Among the three, they hit six home runs on the day, but they still lost to Cincinnati 18-9.

While the major leagues enjoyed a no-hitter on Tuesday, it was nothing like the one tossed by Fred Toney in 1909 on this day. Toney went 17 innings, walking just one batter and striking out 19 Lexington hitters for Winchester.

After a two-hit shutout of the White Sox today in 1913, Walter Johnson has run his scoreless streak to 52 2/3 consecutive innings.

Twin brothers Eddie and Johnny O’Brien become the first twins to play for the same team in the same game on this day in 1954 as Johnny enters the second game of a doubleheader for the Pirates as a defensive replacement and Eddie pinch runs later in the game.

For Hank Aaron, his 755 career home runs were hit consistently over a long career, but in 1967 on this day, he recorded the one unique one – the only inside-the-park home run of his career, hit off of the Phillies Jim Bunning.
