San Diego Padres Jordan Lyles flirts with perfection against the Rockies and more in today’s Relief Roundup!

At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a daily piece into our collection each morning with all of the night’s scores at every level of the majors and minors, along with a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.

Without further adieu, let’s begin!

MLB Scores

Chicago Cubs 3, Atlanta Braves 2 in Atlanta – Undefeated with a lead after the 8th inning coming into the night, the Braves blew their first late lead as the Cubs scored 2 runs in the 9th inning.

Tampa Bay Rays 6, Kansas City Royals 5 in Kansas City – The Rays jumped out with 3 runs in the first inning and held on with a 9th inning run to steal away a win after the Royals came back to tie the game.

Detroit Tigers 9, Cleveland Indians 8 in Detroit – The Indians put up 4 runs in the first inning and led the entire game until the Tigers staged a huge comeback, capped by a 5-run 7th inning that won them the game.

Oakland Athletics 5, Boston Red Sox 3 in Boston – The Athletics jumped out with 3 runs in the first two innings, including a dramatic home run for Stephen Piscotty in his first game back after his mother’s funeral.

Arizona Diamondbacks 2, Milwaukee Brewers 1 in Arizona – Each team put up a single run in the 4th inning, and the Diamondbacks won the game with a run in the bottom of the 8th inning off the Brewers bullpen. Veteran starters Jhoulys Chacin and Zack Greinke threw 13 innings combined with only 2 combined runs allowed.

Houston Astros 5, Los Angeles Angels 3 in Los Angeles – With two strong starters on the mound, this game was decided by the bullpens as Houston’s shut down the Angels after the Halos scored 2 in the first while the Angels bullpen allowed 4 runs in the final two innings to lose the game.

San Diego Padres 4, Colorado Rockies 0 in San Diego – San Diego Padres starter Jordan Lyles took a perfect game into the 8th inning and left having allowed just one hit on the game, the only hit the Rockies would get as the Padres dominated the game with great pitching.

San Francisco Giants 5, Cincinnati Reds 3 in San Francisco – The Giants responded to an early 3-0 Reds lead with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and added on another late run to take the home win. Brandon Belt hit a home run in the 4th inning rally.

Pittsburgh Pirates 7, Chicago White Sox 0 in Pittsburgh – Trevor Williams and two relievers combined to shut out the White Sox as the offense pounded out 10 hits in the win.

New York Yankees @ Washington Nationals in Washington, Suspended in the top of the 6th inning with the game tied 3-3 due to rain.

Philadelphia Phillies @ Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, PPD

Miami Marlins 4, Los Angeles Dodgers 2 in Miami – Wei-Yin Chen and Nick Wittgren combined for 6 shutout innings and the Marlins offense pieced together 4 runs with 12 hits.

New York Mets 12, Toronto Blue Jays 2 in New York – The Blue Jays had their one moment of success against Noah Syndergaard, and the Mets offense seemed to take that as a cue to explode, scoring 8 runs over the next two innings.

Minnesota Twins 4, St. Louis Cardinals 1 in Minnesota – Jose Berrios had his best start in some time, and the Twins offense woke up in the 6th inning to after Jack Flaherty shut them down for 5 2/3 innings.

Seattle Mariners 9, Texas Rangers 8, 11 innings in Seattle – The Mariners scored in each of the first four innings, but the Rangers were able to come back to tie the game in the 9th inning before the Mariners walked off with a win in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Standouts

Often big power performances are recognized in this space, but an excellent performance on the bases is just as worthy of note. Jean Segura had such a game for Seattle on Tuesday, going 3-5 on the night, scoring 3 runs and driving in a run and also drawing a walk, but what catches the eye is that he stole 4 bases in the game!

Into the 8th inning, Jordan Lyles was perfect. When he was pulled from the game, he was still very, very good, finishing his day for the San Diego Padres with 7 1/3 innings thrown, one hit allowed, one walk allowed, and 10 strikeouts.
