Washington Nationals Max Scherzer wins his 9th, Corey Kluber wins his 8th, and more in today’s Relief Roundup
At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we will be including a daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
MLB Scores
Cleveland Indians 9, Chicago White Sox 1 in Cleveland – Corey Kluber dominated the game, picking up his 8th win of the season, and the Indians offense struck early.
Pittsburgh Pirates 2, Chicago Cubs 1 in Pittsburgh – A tremendous pitching duel between Joe Musgrove and Kyle Hendricks went to Musgrove as he won his 2nd start of the season.
New York Yankees 5, Houston Astros 3 in New York – Luis Severino picked up his 8th win on the season, and Dallas Keuchel continued to be the hard-luck pitcher on the Astros staff this season, with a 3-7 record in spite of a solid 3.65 ERA.
Washington Nationals 2, Baltimore Orioles 0 in Baltimore – Max Scherzer was dominant en route to picking up his 9th win on the season, the most in the majors, and Bryce Harper knocked out his 18th home run as the Nationals won on the road.
Detroit Tigers 6, Los Angeles Angels 1 in Detroit – Shohei Ohtani threw 5 1-run innings, but when he left, the Tigers jumped all over the Angels bullpen, and the Angels offense couldn’t bounce back.
Boston Red Sox 6, Toronto Blue Jays 4 in Boston – Eduardo Rodriguez took his record to 6-1, and Craig Kimbrel picked up his 18th save on the season as the Red Sox picked up the divisional win.
New York Mets 4, Atlanta Braves 1 in Atlanta – A well-pitched battle into the 7th inning, the Mets were able to put up a couple runs on the Braves bullpen to distance the game, and no Atlanta late-game heroics were in store for this night.
Milwaukee Brewers 3, St. Louis Cardinals 2 in Milwaukee – Alex Reyes made his return to the mound for the Cardinals, but he left after throwing 4 innings, and the Brewers were able to get to the Cards’ relievers while Junior Guerra pitched an excellent game.
Kansas City Royals 11, Minnesota Twins 8 in Kansas City – The Royals jumped all over Twins rookie starter Fernando Romero for 9 runs in the first two innings, and while the Twins did come back, they could only get within 9-8 before the Royals added a pair of late runs to ice the game.
San Francisco Giants 7, Colorado Rockies 4 in Colorado – The Rockies were able to put 3 runs across in the first inning, but Derek Holland was able settle in after that point and the Giants offense came alive.
Cincinnati Reds 7, Arizona Diamondbacks 4 in Arizona – The Diamondbacks struck first, jumping out on Sal Romano with 4 early runs, but the Reds were able to get to Patrick Corbin for 4 runs of their own in the 4th inning and kept piling on from there to pick up the road win.
San Diego Padres 3, Miami Marlins 2 in San Diego – The Padres trailed most of the game, but they were able to put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the 9th to walk off with a Wednesday victory.
Tampa Bay Rays 6, Oakland Athletics 0 in Oakland – Nate Eovaldi had an incredible game in his first start in nearly 2 years as he took a no hitter through the sixth inning while the Rays offense were able to beat up on Sean Manaea.
Los Angeles Dodgers 8, Philadelphia Phillies 2 in Los Angeles – Ross Stripling put together an excellent start and the Dodgers offense scored in 5 different innings on the night to grab the home win.
Texas Rangers 7, Seattle Mariners 6 in Seattle – The Rangers and Mariners went back and forth before the Rangers put up 4 runs in the 7th inning to ice the game, in spite of the Mariners threatening in the 9th inning.
Wednesday Standouts
After coming over from Cuba with plenty of hype, outfielder Jorge Soler had not really produced, but he’s found a new gear with the Royals this season. On Wednesday, he gave a great example of that, as he went 4-5 with a double and a home run, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs.
On a day full of excellent pitching performances, Max Scherzer still stood head and shoulders above the rest to pick up his league-leading 9th win of the season, going 8 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and a walk, striking out 12 hitters.
