Chicago Cubs 2, New York Mets 0 in New York – Jon Lester and Steven Matz had an impressive battle on Sunday, with the Cubs scratching across two runs in the 7th inning to decide the game.
Toronto Blue Jays 8, Detroit Tigers 4 in Detroit – After five scoreless innings, the Blue Jays jumped onto Tigers starter Michael Fulmer, and the Blue Jays were able to hold off the Tigers late rally.
Atlanta Braves 4, Washington Nationals 2 in Atlanta – Other than a 2-run home run from Trea Turner, the Braves were able to shut down the Nationals offense, and of course, the Braves ended up walking off with a Charlie Culberson home run in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving the Braves control of first place.
Minnesota Twins 7, Cleveland Indians 5 in Minnesota – Minnesota Twins outfielder Eddie Rosario knocked out 3 home runs and Kyle Gibson had a solid start to help the Twins take the Sunday game in spite of Edwin Encarnacion pounding out a pair of home runs himself.
Chicago White Sox 6, Milwaukee Brewers 1 in Chicago – The game opened with 4 scoreless, but the White Sox were able to put up 3 runs in the 6th inning to put the game away behind home runs from Daniel Palka and Adam Engel.
Oakland Athletics 5, Kansas City Royals 1 in Kansas City – An incredible pitching matchup between Daniel Gossett and Jake Junis was broken up by the Athletics putting up 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning, the big offensive explosion of the day.
St. Louis Cardinals 5, Pittsburgh Pirates 0 in St. Louis – Michael Wacha picked up his 7th win by tossing 8 shutout innings with 8 strikeouts as Marcell Ozuna powered out a grand slam.
Los Angeles Dodgers 10, Colorado Rockies 7 in Colorado – A back and forth game started with a 4-run first inning from the Rockies, and the Dodgers finally closed out the scoring in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs and Kenley Jansen closed the door for his 14th save.
San Francisco Giants 6, Philadelphia Phillies 1 in San Francisco – A tight ballgame was blown apart in the 6th inning when the Giants put up 5 runs on Phillies starter Jake Arrieta. Ivan Rodriguez’s son Dereck picked up his first major league win in the Giants victory.
Los Angeles Angels 3, Texas Rangers 1 in Los Angeles – Tyler Skaggs tossed a great game, and Justin Upton backed him up with a home run as the Angels worked to get back on track with a home win on Sunday.
Arizona Diamondbacks 6, Miami Marlins 1 in Arizona – Matt Koch rebounded after a slump and put up one of his best starts of the season while the offense took advantage of 8 walks by Miami pitchers to give the Diamondbacks the win.
Seattle Mariners 2, Tampa Bay Rays 1 in Seattle – Felix Hernandez pitched an excellent game and finally got a pair of runs of support in the 8th inning to give the Mariners the home victory.
San Diego Padres 6, Cincinnati Reds 3 in San Diego – The Padres jumped out in the bottom of the 5th with a 4-run inning to put the game out of reach on a Hunter Renfroe pinch hit grand slam.
Boston Red Sox @ Houston Astros in Houston – The Red Sox jumped out for a pair of runs in the first inning and Rick Porcello pitched a great game to pick up his 8th win, while the Red Sox offense piled on late to put the game out of reach.

With his family in attendance, Minnesota Twins outfielder Eddie Rosario powered out 3 home runs, including a walk-off homer to win the game for the Minnesota Twins to defeat the Cleveland Indians. Rosario went 3-5 on the day with 4 RBI.
Michael Wacha nearly tossed a no-hitter, finishing his day for the Cardinals with 8 innings, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks, striking out 8 as the Cardinals shut out the Pirates.

He’ll square off against a Tigers team that’s played above their head recently and could give him some trouble.

Franklin Barreto has been back and forth betwen Oakland and Nashville over and over this season, but whenever he’s with Nashville, he certainly hits, and he did just that on Sunday, going 4-5 with a double and a home run, scoring a pair of runs.
Dillon Overton had a tremendous game on Sunday for El Paso, going 7 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and no walks, striking out 3.

With no Hall of Fame players born today, I’ll focus instead on a player with one of the better family connections in the game since his arrival in the league in 1980.
Tony Pena was never a guy who was a great hitter, though he was never a “bad” hitter, either, with a career .260 batting average with 107 home runs over 18 seasons in the major leagues with six teams. His brother Ramon was a pitcher who got a cup of coffee in the major leagues while his sons Tony Jr. and Francisco have had major league careers.
Pena made 5 All-Star teams over his career, and he won 4 Gold Gloves. Pena had a very good reputation for his work behind the plate, and many felt that would transition to a managerial role someday.
Sure enough, after retiring at 40 years old, he was hired as the manager with the Kansas City Royals in 2002 at 45 years old. In 2003, he led the Royals to an 83-79 record, the only time between 1994 and 2013 that the Royals finished above .500. Of course, mentioning that indicates that the rest of his tenure did not go well, and Pena has found a home as a coach, currently serving as the Yankees first base coach. In 2013, Pena coached the Dominican Republic team in the WBC, the only team that went undefeated in the WBC, winning the title.

In 1890, Tim Keefe wins his 300th game, becoming the 2nd pitcher to ever hit the mark. While 24 pitchers have cleared the 300-win mark, it is increasingly rare to see a pitcher in the modern game even win 200 games.
Hank Frazee passes away on this day in 1929. His legacy in baseball will always be cemented as the man who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees.
In a show of all-out effort, Dodgers outfielder Pete Reiser is knocked unconscious as he runs into the wall chasing down a fly ball. Reiser remarkably holds onto the ball, but he is in the hospital for 10 days.
On this day in 1950, Ernie Banks made his professional debut, playing for the legendary Negro Leagues team, the Kansas City Monarchs.
Chipper Jones is selected first overall by the Atlanta Braves on this day in the 1990 draft.
