The St. Louis Cardinals top rookie eligible prospect Alex Reyes is likely shelved longer than initially expected, with rumors buzzing like crazy on his 2018 future.

The St. Louis Cardinals are on fire, after a stellar weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates, taking three of four from their hated division rivals in epic fashion. The series boasted two epic walk-off wins by the Birds on the Bat, capped off by a near no-hitter by Michael Wacha.

After a rough stretch near the end of May, the St. Louis Cardinals were trending upward. Not only with that big series win, but with the upcoming return of some of their best players — Yadier Molina, Carlos Martinez (who is expected to start today), and rookie phenom Alex Reyes.

After a stellar rehab tour with the St. Louis Cardinals minor league affiliates, Alex Reyes was poised for an epic MLB return. Last Wednesday, Alex Reyes made his 2018 MLB debut against the Milwaukee Brewers. However, things didn’t go as expected, as Alex Reyes labored for not even five-innings, with his velocity dropping a few MPH more than usual — a cause of concern for the St. Louis Cardinals.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, an MRI reported a right lat strain, which put Alex Reyes back on the Disabled List — of the 10-day variety. Mike Matheny described the mood of the rookie pitcher of being “really sad,” and us St. Louis Cardinals are sharing in his grief.

To make matters worse, it appears that Alex Reyes will be out for an indefinite amount of time, longer than expected. St. Louis Cardinals General Manager Michael Girsch stated:

"“It is not going to be a couple starts. It’s going to be more than a few starts. “It’s frustrating from a team perspective. I can’t really imagine it from Alex’s perspective, the amount of time he’s put in…”"

Adding insult to injury, a St. Louis Cardinals fan started a wild rumor that Alex Reyes may be done for the season, and potentially his career, based on no facts whatsoever.

Do not believe a word he or other fans on Twitter say unless it comes from the St. Louis Cardinals or St. Louis Post-Dispatch sources. Thanks for causing myself and other Redbirds fans to have a heart attack upon reading such “information.”

The fact that Alex Reyes is missing any significant time is a true and utter shame. After making it all the way back from Tommy John surgery, then returning to his true form (and even better); this setback is a crippling blow to the St. Louis Cardinals postseason aspirations.

He’s a real X-factor; one that would have been the variable putting the St. Louis Cardinals over the hump in the NL Central. Now, once again, the St. Louis Cardinals will need to embrace the next man up mentality — one they’ve grown too accustomed to during Mike Matheny’s tenure with the team.

Alex Reyes is expected to miss significant for the St. Louis Cardinals, but don’t believe any of this out for the season or done for the career nonsense — unless you hear it from an official source.
