Tim Tebow – major leaguer? That time may be sooner that one would expect for the New York Mets minor leaguer.

Tim Tebow has managed to surprise throughout his journey through the New York Mets minor league system. Whether it is his penchant for homering in his first at bat in a new level to his steady improvement as he climbs the ladder, there appears to be a little more than Tebow being a publicity stunt.

Those improvements are continuing at the AA level. Playing for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the Eastern League, Tebow has held his own in that is considered to be a proving ground for prospects. He has produced a surprising .245/.339/.377 batting line with seven doubles and four homers. Yes, there are concerns, especially with his 71 strikeouts in 183 plate appearances, but Tebow has actually been useful in the lineup.

That progress has not been unnoticed in the Mets front office. While Tebow is focused on getting better with each day in the minors, the Mets are already looking upon him as a future major league player.

Considering his improvements this season, a promotion to AAA may not be outside the realm of possibility in short order. Should that happen, and Tebow again shows capable of handling the competition, a trip to the majors is not unreasonable. Especially if the Mets find themselves out of playoff contention, and looking for a reason for fans to come to the ballpark come late August and September.

Naturally, there are questions as to how often Tebow would play. The Mets have quite a logjam in the outfield already, and Tebow is strictly a left fielder. With Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto, and Jay Bruce as the expected starting lineup, they do not have enough room for Brandon Nimmo to get regular at bats. Jose Bautista is on the roster, getting time in left and at third. Where would Tebow fit?

That is a question that the Mets front office would love to have to figure out. One would have to imagine that Tebow would get quite a few appearances, especially if he manages to get a few hits to begin his big league career. Otherwise, if he is struggling and in the lineup, then it would prove that he is nothing more than the publicity stunt that he was thought to be.
