Baltimore Orioles fans now have another reason to hope that first baseman Chris Davis gets a hit, as a Baltimore bar is offering free shots any time the slumping first baseman gets a hit.
It is not enough to say that Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has struggled this year. He is actually on pace for a historically bad year, surpassing the previous record for lowest WAR in a season by over a full run. For Davis, who has a .150/.227/.227 batting line with eight extra base hits this season, the season likely cannot end soon enough.
Meanwhile, the Orioles have had an equally brutal year. Even though they were not one of the teams intentionally tanking this season, they have stumbled out of the gate to a 19-48 record, the worst record in the game. Aside from Davis’ pursuit of history, the biggest story in Baltimore is the inevitable trade of Manny Machado.
It is understandable that interest in the Orioles has waned this season given their performance on the field. However, a Baltimore bar, Bartender’s Pub, has found a great way to revive interest in the Orioles while having fans root Davis on. They are running a promotion that, whenever Davis gets a hit, they are giving away a free Dr. Pepper shooter, which is a mixture of amaretto and Miller High Life.

Chances are, the pub will end up making more money than they will be losing. In Davis’ 57 games this season, he has gotten a hit in only 25 of them. Only six of those games have seen Davis get more than one hit, and even those multi-hit games have all resulted in two hits. With Davis having just four hits in his last 39 plate appearances, and without a multi-hit game since May 11. Those Orioles fans hoping for a free drink may have those dreams crashed.
Likewise, as Davis continues to struggle, the Orioles may find reasons to keep him out of the lineup. Pedro Alvarez could, at least in theory, play first, and has managed to hit eight homers this year. Mark Trumbo can also play at first, and has been relatively useful with the bat. The problem is, their depth is not playing well either.
With his contract, and another $92 million due over the next four seasons, the Orioles will have to hope that Davis comes out of this slump. However, at this point, unless he can be motivated by giving Orioles fans free booze, nothing may work.

If Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis gets a hit, patrons of Bartender’s Pub will get a free drink. There may be a lot of thirsty patrons waiting.
