Another day, another excellent start from Jacob deGrom, and yet another New York Mets loss.

The New York Mets cannot ask anything more from Jacob deGrom. He has been phenomenal on the mound, posting a 4-1 record, along with a league leading 1.57 ERA and a 1.008 WHiP heading into Wednesday’s outing against the Braves.  In typical fashion, deGrom dominated yet again, allowing just one run in his seven innings while recording seven strikeouts.

And, again, the New York Mets were unable to muster any offense. Braves starter Mike Soroka and a trio of relievers allowed only two hits and three walks, as the Mets took yet another loss. That inability to score runs for deGrom has been noticed by the players, leading to a feeling of despair in the dugout.

More from Call to the Pen

It is easy to understand why morale would be so low. In his last eight starts, the Mets have scored a combined 11 runs for deGrom. Only three times have the Mets scored more than a single run in any of these contests, with the high water mark being three runs, a total they reached only twice. In those eight starts, deGrom himself has allowed only seven runs, with six being earned, over 48 innings. The Mets are 1-7 in those games.

The games against the Braves only magnify those woes. In his four starts against Atlanta, spanning 25 innings, deGrom has allowed just two runs. The Mets have lost all four of those starts. Although they scored a combined six runs, the bullpen imploded after deGrom’s departure from the game, costing him at least two more victories.

At this point in time, the Mets inability to score runs may be becoming a bit of a self fulfilling prophesy. They know they are struggling to score when deGrom is on the mound, so they start pressing. That added pressure leads to more trouble scoring. Meanwhile, deGrom has been fabulous, but the Mets have nothing to show for it.
