New York Mets executive Sandy Alderson announced a leave of absence. Could this be a big issue in the Big Apple during the MLB Trade Deadline?

New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson announced on Tuesday evening that he would be taking a leave of absence from his role with the organization to undergo cancer treatment.

While everyone at Call to the Pen is wishing the best for Sandy Alderson as he faces cancer treatment, his absence does leave the New York Mets in a bind as the MLB Trade Deadline looms in just over a month.

The New York Mets have a pair of the most elite trade options on the entire trade market this season in Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. With Alderson stepping down, a three-headed team of John Ricco, Omar Minaya, and J.P. Ricciardi will handle deals, but it could be hairy to get all three to act in concert on any move involving one of the team’s aces.

The Mets don’t just have tremendous top-of-the-rotation arms available, however. They have a trio of very valuable pieces this trade deadline season.

Infielder Asdrubal Cabrera could be incredibly desirable as he enters free agency after the season. He’s currently hitting .278/.322/.475 with 13 home runs on the season, and he can fill in at 2B/3B/SS, which would be a valuable asset for many teams.

While the Mets just acquired Devin Mesoraco, the impending free agent could be extremely valuable on the trade market as a rash of catching injuries have hit contending teams. He could become a very valuable trade chip to help add to the Mets future plans instead.

Finally, the other big arm the New York Mets will have to offer is closer Jeurys Familia. Familia will hit free agency after this season, and he’s having a very good season, with a 2.41 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings on the year.

How the New York Mets handle the MLB Trade Deadline will be very interesting to watch, but Sandy Alderson stepping back, whether that be temporary or permanent, will add a whole added dimension to that intrigue!
