At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we have brought back our daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
Yesterday’s MLB Scores
Cincinnati Reds 3, Chicago Cubs 2 in Chicago – Rookie Tyler Mahle tossed 6 2/3 innings of 1-run ball against the Cubs offense, and the Reds offense made good work of 9 hits to manufacture runs, getting no extra-base hits in the game.
Washington Nationals 3, Miami Marlins 2 in Washington – The Nationals walked off on a Mark Reynolds home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Marlins after neither offense could capitalize on plenty of opportunities in the game.
Philadelphia Phillies 17, Pittsburgh Pirates 5 in Pittsburgh – The Phillies offense exploded for 17 runs in a game that featured 30 hits and 14 walks from both teams, though the Pirates didn’t capitalize on their hits in the same way.
Toronto Blue Jays 6, New York Yankees 2 in Toronto – The Blue Jays rode a 5-run first inning all the way to a big home victory over the Yankees on Friday night. The Jays got a balanced effort on the night, using six pitchers in a “bullpen” game and getting hits from all but one starter in the lineup.
Cleveland Indians 10, Oakland Athletics 4 in Cleveland – The A’s scored the first two runs of the game on the road against Carlos Carrasco in his first game back from the DL, but he then locked in, and the Indians offense finally had a big game behind him to get the home victory.
New York Mets 5, Tampa Bay Rays 1 in New York – Jose Bautista hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th inning to win the game for the Mets after a tremendous pitching duel between Jacob deGrom and the Rays mix of relievers (6 pitchers combined for 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 11 before the 9th inning).
Detroit Tigers 3, Texas Rangers 1 in Detroit – The only thing that could beat a complete game from the Big Sexy on Friday night was a tremendous start from Jordan Zimmermann, who struck out 11 over 8 innings to give the Tigers the home win.
Milwaukee Brewers 5, Atlanta Braves 4 in Milwaukee – The Brewers could only put up runs in one inning on the Braves all night, but that was enough, as they put up 5 runs in the 3rd and held off the Braves offense for a home victory on Friday between the two division leaders.
Minnesota Twins 6, Baltimore Orioles 2 in Minnesota – The Twins jumped out with 3 first inning runs and made the most of their 11 hits as the Orioles matched the Twins in hits, but could not put together crucial hits to move the lineup along, managing just 2 runs.
Houston Astros 11, Chicago White Sox 4 in Houston – Lance McCullers, Jr. picked up his 10th win while striking out 12 over 7 innings, and the Astros offense blew up for 7 runs in the 8th inning to put this game out of reach.
Boston Red Sox 10, Kansas City Royals 5 in Kansas City – The Red Sox put up a 4-spot in both the first and second innings en route to a big win on Friday to pick up the team’s 60th win of the season.
Arizona Diamondbacks 3, San Diego Padres 1 in Arizona – They took their time in doing so, but finally the Diamondbacks gave Zack Godley some support late in the game to get him to his 10th victory of the season.
Los Angeles Angels 3, Los Angeles Dodgers 2 in Los Angeles – The Angels put together a rally in the bottom of the 9th to win after a good pitching matchup over the first 8 innings put the Dodgers in a position for a 1-run win.
Colorado Rockies 7, Seattle Mariners 1 in Seattle – Though he’s struggled for much of the 2018 season, German Marquez pulled out a gem on Friday, and the Rockies offense backed him well to pull off the road win.
San Francisco Giants 3, St. Louis Cardinals 2 in San Francisco – The Giants and Cardinals played a nip and tuck game Friday night that San Francisco came away with a 1-run victory after both young starters had given their teams a quality start and the bullpens were left to decide things.
Top Pitcher
On a night when four pitchers cleared a 75 game score, Jordan Zimmermann’s wasn’t the best of the night, but he was the most impressive pitching performance of the night, going 8 strong innings for the Tigers, striking out 11 as he allowed 1 run on 4 hits and no walks. Zimmermann improved to 4-0 and a 3.51 ERA on the season.
Top Hitter
Houston’s Evan Gattis led a balanced attack against the White Sox on Friday, going 3-4 with a pair of runs scored, 4 RBI, a double, a home run, and even drew a walk as well.
Today’s Game to Watch
The Blue Jays may be in “sell” mode, but one of their most attractive pieces takes the mound this afternoon as JA Happ climbs the hill for the hometown Toronto club against their division rivals, the Yankees, who send Luis Severino in opposition, seeking his 14th win on the season.
