The Houston Astros won on a unique walk-off from Alex Bregman, and more in today’s Relief Roundup!
At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we have brought back our daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
Yesterday’s MLB Scores
Baltimore Orioles 6, New York Yankees 5 in Baltimore – After two home runs, Manny Machado was walked in the bottom of the 9th inning intentionally to load the bases, and his presence on first base may have added to the difficulty in picking up a single by Jonathan Schoop that deflected off the first baseman’s glove and allowed the winning run to score.
Washington Nationals 5, Pittsburgh Pirates 1 in Pittsburgh – A tremendous pitching matchup finally got broken open in the 5th and 6th by the Nationals. The teams combined for 19 hits and 7 walks in the game but could only generate 6 runs.
Cincinnati Reds 7, Cleveland Indians 4 in Cleveland – The Indians put up 4 runs in the first two innings and held the game all the way until the 9th inning, when the Reds exploded for 7 runs to win the ballgame.
Tampa Bay Rays 5, Detroit Tigers 2 in Tampa Bay – The Rays put all their runs up in the 3rd inning and then shut out the Tigers until the 9th inning when the Tigers finally put up a pair of runs.
Milwaukee Brewers 8, Miami Marlins 4 in Miami – The Brewers had a 4-run 2nd inning and were able to hold off the Marlins to get a win in Miami on Tuesday.
Philadelphia Phillies 7, New York Mets 3 in New York – Two pitchers made their major league debut in the game, but Philly’s Enyel De Los Santos got the better of the matchup as his team gave him 5 runs of support between the 2nd and 3rd inning.
Boston Red Sox 8, Texas Rangers 4 in Boston – The Red Sox used a 5-run 3rd inning and a solid effort in a “bullpen” game, using six relievers to get through the game.
Toronto Blue Jays 6, Atlanta Braves 2 in Atlatna – The Braves and Blue Jays were enjoying a great nip-and-tuck game until the 8th inning, when the Blue Jays exploded for 5 runs off the Braves bullpen.
Kansas City Royals 9, Minnesota Twins 4 in Minnesota – The Royals snapped the Twins 5-game winning streak with a 4-run 2nd inning that they were able to make stand up for a victory.
Houston Astros 6, Oakland Athletics 5, 11 innings, in Houston – The A’s were able to come all the way back from 4 runs down to tie the game and send it into extra innings, and they thought they had the game won with a run in the top of the 11th inning, but a crazy play that should have been an out at home was dropped by the catcher, allowing a run to score, and then a dribbler by Alex Bregman in front of the catcher was thrown into right field to bring in the winning run. It deserves a video of the play:
St. Louis Cardinals 14, Chicago White Sox 2 in Chicago – The Cardinals used 16 hits (12 of them singles) and 8 walks to blow out the White Sox Tuesday night and support starter Miles Mikolas to his 10th win on the season.
Arizona Diamondbacks 5, Colorado Rockies 3 in Colorado – The Diamondbacks were able to get 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning to secure a road win against the Rockies in a battle of last year’s NL Wild Card participants.
Los Angeles Angels 9, Seattle Mariners 3 in Los Angeles – The Mariners jumped out with 3 runs right away in the game, but the Angels were able to keep chipping away all game long adding to their tally with 16 hits over the game.
San Diego Padres 4, Los Angeles Dodgers 1 in San Diego – Eric Lauer was on his game Tuesday, striking out 8 and allowing just a single run over 8 2/3 innings against the Dodgers offense, allowing just a solo home run in the 9th inning with 2 outs.
Chicago Cubs 2, San Francisco Giants 0 in San Francisco – Jose Quintana and three relievers shut down the Giants offense completely on Tuesday for a big road victory as they tried to keep pace in the NL Central.
Top Pitcher
Before the Reds exploded in the 9th inning Tuesday, they were shut down by Trevor Bauer, who was dominating them over 8 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 12 unlucky Reds hitters on the night.
Top Hitter
His name is constantly in the news right now, but Manny Machado hasn’t allowed it to affect his play this season, to the contrary, he’s been having his best offensive season of his career, hitting a pair of home runs as he went 3-4 with a walk.
Today’s Game to Watch
The Phillies are attempting to figure out their rotation behind Nola/Arrieta should they reach the postseason, and certainly one of the most talented candidates for a spot would be Vince Velasquez, but his inconsistency has hurt him. He’ll look to get on track facing off against top MLB Trade Deadline target Jacob deGrom of the Mets Wednesday night in New York.
