Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is hoping to return in 2018, but they may be better off without him this year.

The Boston Red Sox find themselves in a difficult situation when it comes to Dustin Pedroia. His heart and hustling style of play have made him one of the leaders on the team, a fan favorite who is the perfect sparkplug for the Red Sox dynamic offense. of course, that statement comes with the caveat of Pedroia being healthy, which has been a problem over the last few years.

Those health woes have ruined his 2018 campaign. he has played in just three games, getting one hit and drawing two walks in his 13 plate appearances. Although he tried valiantly to return, Pedroia’s balky knee just was not right. Placed back on the disabled list after that short stint, he still is not close to returning to the lineup. Yet, that has not dissuaded Pedroia from attempting to find a way to return this season, even if time is running out.

More from Call to the Pen

At this point, the Red Sox would be better off without Pedroia coming back. Yes, second base has been a disaster in his absence, but knowing that Pedroia is out for the season would provide clarity. Instead of hoping that he would eventually return, Boston could make a move as the deadline approaches, looking to bring in a player to solidify the position.

Such a move worked well last season while Pedroia was dealing with injury woes. Eduardo Nunez had an excellent two months with Boston, hitting eight homers and stealing six bases in his 38 games after being traded from the Giants. Bringing in another rental second baseman at the deadline could even help Nunez, allowing him to return to his more familiar role as a super utility player. Such a move may even be able to jumpstart Nunez’ bat as well.

It is certainly commendable that Pedroia is making that attempt to return to action this season. His heart and determination have served him well throughout his career, turning a relatively unassuming player into a perennial All Star, a Rookie of the Year, and an MVP. However, in this case, it may be best to put that determination aside, and spend this time making sure he can produce in 2019.

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is not willing to wave the white flag on this season. It would be better if he did, and focused on next year.
