Why the Los Angeles Dodgers Trading for Machado Makes Sense

With a Manny Machado trade on the verge of happening, does it make sense for his potential new team?

For weeks, we’ve heard rumblings. We’ve been hearing that Manny Machado could head to the Yankees, the Cubs, the Phillies, the Brewers and yes, the Dodgers. Now, the Baltimore Orioles have a deal in place, presumably with the Dodgers, and will most likely trade Machado on Wednesday, reports ESPN.

If not for the All-Star Game, this trade would probably be a done deal already, but with Machado being the starting shortstop for the American League squad, waiting until tomorrow is the best course of action.

Should the Dodgers emerge as the Orioles chosen trade partner, top prospect OF Yusniel Diaz is likely to be moved. Diaz first entered the spotlight on Sunday when he hit two home runs in the MLB Futures game. He’s the Dodgers’ number four prospect, and a player the Orioles have been showing great interest in. This season alone, he’s hit .314/.428/.477 for the Tulsa Drillers.

In addition, a few veterans are also reportedly on the move.

Should Machado join the Dodgers, the first player on the move will likely be Logan Forsythe. As a Dodger fan, I think Forsythe is great. I have been a fan of his from day 1, but at the same time, he isn’t producing for the Boys in Blue. His WAR on the season is in the negatives (at -0.5) and has only hit .208 in 173 ABs.

Should Forsythe move, his likely replacement will be a platoon of Max Muncy, Kiké Hernandez, and Chris Taylor.

Chances are, this won’t be it for the Dodgers in terms of the trade deadline. Even with the emergence of Caleb Ferguson as a multi-inning reliever, the Dodgers need help in their bullpen. It wouldn’t be surprising if this Machado trade is just the first of many for the reigning NL Champs.

The Dodgers don’t need any help bringing fans to the ballpark; the sunny weather and majestic landscapes of LA do that all by themselves. If Machado joins the Dodgers, however, Chavez Ravine will come alive just like it did this past October.

I’m not sure if Machado will make a momentous impact but he is currently in the middle of the best season of his career.
