The Oakland Athletics are looking to break their all-time attendance record this weekend when they host the San Francisco Giants in the second three-game series of the annual Battle of the Bay.

The Oakland Athletics have announced that they will open Mount Davis, a towering section of 20,000 seats perched high above center field at the Oakland Coliseum. In a tweet earlier today, the A’s encouraged fans to #PackTheTown in an effort to break the all-time single game attendance record of 55,989 set in 2004.

A’s fans have long seen Mount Davis covered in tarps dawning the retired numbers of Oakland greats Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, and Catfish Hunter. Since 2006, the section has been closed off, and with the weekend’s games bound to attract big crowds from both sides of the Bay, the A’s seem to think they can fill more seats, especially at the low cost of $10 per ticket.

The A’s are known for having terrible attendance, regularly ranking 14th out of 15 AL teams in annual attendance. Packing Mount Davis could very well be an encouraging sign of changing times under new leadership, where fans have been promised a new ballpark in Oakland and a new mentality surrounding team transactions.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that both teams are very much in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Giants have arguably been underperforming, but remain just 4 games out of first in their division despite sitting in fourth place in the NL West. The A’s are baseball’s hottest team over the past month, and have slowly climbed to within 3 games of the Wild Card in one of the best divisions in the Majors.

Whether or not Oakland can #PackTheTown the weekend remains to be seen. Just how amped up are Oakland Athletics fans over this surprising group of players who have exceeding all expectations so far? How many Giants fans will be enticed to experience the heights of breezy Mount Davis
