While he wasn’t initially on the roster, Jean Segura made his presence known at the MLB All-Star Game

After Bryce Harper‘s jaw-dropping performance in the Home-Run Derby on Monday, it was time for the annual showdown between the American League and the National League.  The MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night ended with the AL on top by a score of 8-6.  In a game that featured extra innings and a record number of home-runs, it was seen as a success by both the fans and the league.

All four Mariners that were selected to the game were entered into the game at some point.  Outfielder Mitch Haniger stuck out and grounded out in his two plate appearances.  While designated hitter Nelson Cruz walked in his only chance.  But in the 8th inning with the score tied 2-2, Mariners shortstop Jean Segura pinch hit for Francisco Lindor.  Facing lock down Brewers reliever Josh Hader, Segura slammed a three-run homer to left field.  Initially, Jean hadn’t even made the roster and needed the help of fans in the Final Vote Contest to even make the team.  He seemed to be in line to receive the game’s MVP but a teammate, Edwin Diaz had other plans.  Pitching in the 9th for the AL, Diaz surrendered a game-tying two-run homer to Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett.

The 2018 MLB All-Star game would enter extra-innings where Jean Segura would add another single and would score on a sacrifice fly.  The AL would win the game 8-6 with Edwin Diaz receiving the winning decision although blowing the save during the 9th.  Alex Bregman was chosen as the MVP after hitting the go-ahead home-run in the 10th.  Even though Bregman’s homer ultimately won the game for the American League, Segura’s efforts seemed to be much more deserving to win the award.  Scoring twice and driving in three, Jean had a much larger impact on the game’s outcome than anyone else.

Primed for a playoff run, it was exciting the see Mariners not only participate but have an impact at the Mid-Summer Classic.  With a roster full of young talent, they look to hold on to the final Wild-Card spot which they currently lead by a mere three games.
