Commissioner Rob Manfred said that Las Vegas is a possible destination for an MLB expansion team. Such an idea certainly makes sense.

Over the past few months, talk of MLB expansion has increased. Obviously, Montreal is considered a likely destination, with the return of the Expos considered all but given. Portland has been attempting to either lure an existing franchise to relocate, or to gain an expansion franchise of their own.

While other locations have been mentioned for a possible expansion franchise, there has not been much in the way of a definite effort. Montreal and Portland appear to be the frontrunners for when expansion eventually happens, with other locations fun to think about.

That may well have changed. Commissioner Rob Manfred has mentioned Las Vegas as a possible destination for an expansion franchise. Although Vegas had been on the periphery of any expansion talks, that has changed over the past year.

There had been questions on whether or not professional sports could work in Las Vegas, especially given the gambling culture. However, the Golden Knights proved that not only could professional sports work in the city, but they could thrive there as well. The Oakland Raiders will be heading to Vegas in a couple of years, and it may not be a surprise to see an NBA team relocate there. Adding a baseball team would make a lot of sense.

The area has also been a breeding ground for MLB talent. Bryce Harper, who became the Golden Knights biggest fan, hails from the area. Kris Bryant, Erick Fedde, Barry Zito, Marty Cordova, and plenty of other players were born there. Las Vegas is also hope of the 51s, who have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1983. Baseball is a part of the fabric of the city.

Obviously, there are concerns as to how many fans a new team would attract. However, being that Vegas is such a tourist destination, filling the stadium should not be a problem. If an ownership group with excellent finances can either attract an expansion team, or convince another team to relocate, Las Vegas could find themselves as quite the hot destination in baseball.
