The Chicago Cubs used a come back to win the first game of the second half, and more in today’s Relief Roundup!
At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we have brought back our daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
Last night’s MLB Scores
Chicago Cubs 9, St. Louis Cardinals 6 in Chicago – The St. Louis Cardinals took an early lead on a run in the first and second inning, and were up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning. That’s when things went all wrong for Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez.
The Cubs rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to jump out to a big lead, and they kept scoring each time the Cardinals would add in a run of their own. Finally, Pedro Strop closed the door with the final out after the Cardinals scored another run in the top of the 9th to get within 3.
Top Pitcher
Though he did end up giving up a run while he was on the mound, it was unearned, and with the loss of Brandon Morrow, Steve Cishek will become very important to the Chicago Cubs bullpen. He tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowing the one unearned run on 2 hits and no walks, striking out 2 Cardinals hitters.
Top Hitter
Both catchers had big games at the plate in the one game on the schedule, so we can highlight both. Backup Victor Caratini went 3-3 for the Chicago Cubs with a walk, scoring 3 runs and driving in one. His opposition, Yadier Molina, led the Cardinals offense with 4 hits in 5 at bats, scoring a pair of runs, rapping out a double.
Today’s Game to Watch
The Angels enter the second half grasping to playoff life, but they get about the worst possible matchup in their first series of the second half, hosting the defending champion Astros. Dallas Keuchel takes the mound for Houston in Los Angeles against Tyler Skaggs.
