The New York Yankees are on the hunt for help in their starting rotation. They may have already found the answer.

It is fair to say that the New York Yankees starting rotation has been a disaster for much of this season. Even though Luis Severino has taken the next step to becoming an ace, and CC Sabathia has been solid, the rest of the rotation has been a disappointment. Masahiro Tanaka has not lived up to his usual standards. Sonny Gray has been brutal. Youngster Domingo German has displayed promise, but could not keep the ball in the yard and had problems with his command.

After his latest rough outing, German has been sent to the minors. In his place, the Yankees have brought up another young pitcher, their seventh ranked prospect Domingo Acevedo.

German certainly needed a chance to reset. He had struck out 95 batters against 32 walks in his 82.1 innings of work, but also posted a 5.68 ERA and a 1.324 WHiP. His biggest problems came via the home run, as German has allowed 15 homers already this season. While his 4.53 FIP says that he should have performed better than he has, the 25 year old still needs some work to smooth out the rough edges.

Meanwhile, the 24 year old Avecedo will be making his first foray to the majors. He has spent the entire 2018 campaign in Trenton, posting a 2.84 ERA and a 1.125 WHiP, striking out 40 batters and issuing only 18 walks in 50.2 innings. Armed with a mid 90s fastball and a potentially devastating slider, Avecedo will begin his time in the majors as a reliever.

And yet, despite a profile similar to that of Dellin Betances, the Yankees still envision that their latest pitching prospect will remain a starter. Expected to become a solid middle of the rotation option, that time could come soon. With the Yankees still seeking answers at the back of the rotation this year, a strong performance in the bullpen could give Acevedo the chance to claim a spot in the rotation for himself.

Domingo Acevedo is expected to be a big part of the New York Yankees future rotation. That future could be coming soon.
