The Yankees gained in the standings but lost in their lineup, and more in today’s Relief Roundup!

At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we have brought back our daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.

Without further adieu, let’s begin!

Last night’s MLB Scores

Chicago Cubs 7, Arizona Diamondbacks 6 in Chicago – The Arizona Diamondbacks put up 4 runs in the 5th inning to take a commanding 6-3 lead and still had a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. Then, the magic of the 2018 Cubs happened as David Bote and Anthony Rizzo hit back-to-back home runs for a walk-off win for the Cubs.

Los Angeles Angels 12, Chciago White Sox 8 in Los Angeles – A tight ballgame in the early innings blew up when the Angels scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th, and the shootout was on from there as the teams combined for 12 runs over the 3 1/2 innings.

New York Yankees 7, Kansas City Royals 2 in New York – The Yankees scored a big win that ended up allowing them to gain ground in the AL East, but they also lost slugger Aaron Judge, who left after injuring his wrist on a hit by pitch in the first inning.

New York Mets 12, Pittsburgh Pirates 6 in Pittsburgh – The Mets and Pirates both scored 2 runs in the first inning, but the Mets just didn’t let off, scoring in each of the first four innings, and in the last three innings as well as they routed the Pirates on the road.

Tampa Bay Rays 4, Baltimore Orioles 3 in Baltimore – A pair of runs in the 4th and 7th were all the Rays needed as they defeated old friend Alex Cobb on Thursday night in Baltimore.

Minnesota Twins 2, Boston Red Sox 1 in Boston – Forced into a spoiler role on the season, the Twins did just that on Thursday night, scoring late in the game to steal a 2-1 victory on the road against the Red Sox.

Philadelphia Phillies 9, Cincinnati Reds 4 in Cincinnati – The Phillies scored at least one run in 7 innings of the game as they took home a road win over the Reds in rookie Ranger Suarez‘s debut.

Washington Nationals 10, Miami Marlins 3 in Miami – The Marlins jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but that’s all they would get on the day. The Nationals got home runs from Trea Turner and Juan Soto, their 13th and 12th respectively, in the win.

Los Angeles Dodgers 8, Atlanta Braves 2 in Atlanta – A scoreless game over 4 innings, the Dodgers then scored in each of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th inning to lead to a blowout win for the Dodgers on the road in Atlanta.

Oakland Athletics 7, Texas Rangers 6 in Texas – A back-and-forth, nip-tuck game between the A’s and Rangers came down to a tense 9th inning with a leadoff single and wild pitch putting a runner on second when Joey Gallo had some loud contact for the 2nd out of the 9th, but the A’s were able to close it out.

Milwaukee Brewers 7, San Francisco Giants 5 in San Francisco – A 2-2 game going into the 8th inning turned into a shootout as the teams combined to score 8 runs in the final two innings. The Giants had the game-tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 9th when he struck out.

Top Pitcher

The Twins were able to defeat the Red Sox in Boston on Thursday behind a big game from Kyle Gibson, who went 8 innings, allowing a single run on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 7.

Top Hitter

The Phillies were one of several teams that had big offensive games Thursday night, making this choice more difficult, but I’m going to go with Rhys Hoskins here on a 3-5 night, hitting a pair of home runs and a double.

Today’s Game to Watch

The game’s elite standard for pitching takes on an All-Star as the Dodgers travel to Atlanta for a Friday evening game with Clayton Kershaw taking the hill against Mike Foltynewicz.
