1. The New York Mets
They say it’s hard to be a rebuilding team in New York, but the Mets are out of options. They came oh-so-close to a ring a few years ago, but it has been a vividly different story since then. Not only did the Mets struggle to win games in the often pivotal month of June, they’ve been on the losing side of 15 blowouts (like Tuesday night) and can’t seem to right the ship. At this point, a rebuild is the best option for the Mets.
The farm system for the Mets isn’t that strong, Bleacher Report ranks it at 23, but that could change quickly. This team has the stars to bring back a game-changing amount of prospects. Jacob deGrom could be this year’s “JV to Houston”. Noah Syndergaard could quite literally alter a rotation should he arrive in a new city. The Mets just need to make the moves. As of now, the Phillies, and the Braves stand between the Mets and the postseason. The Nationals are a story of their own.
I think the Mets made a mistake not moving any big names on Tuesday. Now, it seems like they are just waiting for answers, and a rebuild could be the only way to get them.
2. The Boston Red Sox
I know what you may be thinking, the Red Sox are leading the AL East, how is it that they lost the deadline? Well, like many teams before them, it’s not about what the Red Sox did, so much as what they didn’t do. They did trade for Nathan Eovaldi, a solid move that could mean a lot more come October. The Red Sox, however, will always be competing with the New York Yankees and the Yankees did a lot this week.
The Red Sox are in great shape. Their offense has been mashing all season long, but that has never been their issue. The issue, or rather the potential issue, is pitching. Yesterday, the Sox placed Chris Sale on the DL. Though this injury may not be a big deal, it always has the chance to turn into one. It makes you wonder if the Sox were wrong in staying quiet on Deadline day?
3. The Cleveland Indians
The Indians needed to make some moves, big moves, on Tuesday. Yes, they wanted to trade for Bryce Harper before he was taken off the market, and yes, they are leading the AL Central by 9 games. Unlike many teams, the questions don’t lie in the present, but rather in the future for Cleveland. The Indians are good enough to win the division, but are they good enough to beat the Red Sox, the Yankees, or the Astros?
At this point, probably not.
The Indians could have made more moves than just trading for Leonys Martin. They did trade for Brad Hand about two weeks ago, a move that made a lot of sense, but the biggest question that will linger around the Indians until October arrives is this; will it be enough?
