New York Mets: Jose Reyes makes home run history
Thanks to his disastrous pitching debut the day before, New York Mets infielder Jose Reyes made history on Wednesday night.
Back on Tuesday, the New York Mets found themselves in a massacre, annihilated by the Washington Nationals, taking a historic 25-4 loss. The game was out of hand to the point where Jose Reyes made his pitching debut, and let us just say, it did not go well. In his inning of work, Reyes gave up six runs on five hits and two walks, allowing two home runs.
Then, on Wednesday, it was Reyes’ turn to show power. He hit two home runs, becoming the first person since Cap Anson in 1884 to hit two home runs in a game after giving up two homers in the game before.

This is really the only highlight for Reyes this season. As bad as he was on the mound, he has been nearly as bad with the bat. Prior to his surprising power display, Reyes had “produced” a .184/.254/.240 batting line. Even his speed had gone away, as he had only five steals in six attempts. Reyes had also cost the Mets a total of seven runs between his attempts to play second, third, and short.
In a lot of ways, Reyes is a lot like the Mets. New York has a lot of name players, but that talent has not been matched by their record. Reyes is also a name player, one whose glory days came with the Mets nearly a decade ago when he was a terror on the basepaths. However, he is not even close to that now, a disappointment just like the team he is a part of.
At 35 years old, and a free agent after this season, Reyes may not have much time left in a major league uniform. He had struggled at the beginning of 2017, putting his future into doubt as well, before turning his season around and becoming a viable option as a utility player. However, this season, that turnaround has not happened. With the calendar having turned to August, it does not appear as though that turnaround will happen.
Jose Reyes made history with the New York Mets on Wednesday. That may well be his last hurrah in the majors.
