The Boston Red Sox nearly no-hit the Yankees, Ohtani went deep twice, and more in today’s Relief Roundup!

At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we have brought back our daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.

Without further adieu, let’s begin!

Last night’s MLB Scores

Chicago Cubs 5, San Diego Padres 4 in Chicago – The Padres tried to rally late again, scoring 2 runs in the top of the 9th inning, but they came up short in afternoon action as the Cubs got a much-needed win.

Cincinnati Reds @ Washington Nationals in Washington – Postponed

Philadelphia Phillies 5, Miami Marlins 1 in Philadelphia – The Phillies skirted on a 2-0 lead while Vince Velasquez pitched a gem, but once he left and the bullpen gave up a run, they put up 3 runs in the 8th to seal the win.

Atlanta Braves 2, New York Mets 1 in New York – Once again, the Mets could not support Jacob deGrom against the Braves as he pitched an excellent game but the Mets offense couldn’t give him any support.

Chicago White Sox 3, Tampa Bay Rays 2, 10 innings in Tampa Bay – The White Sox scored in the top of the 10th to come away with the win in a game when each team scored their two runs in regulation in a single inning.

Los Angeles Angels 7, Cleveland Indians 4 in Cleveland – The teams battled back and forth until the Angels exploded for a 4-run 8th inning to put the game out of reach on the road Friday night.

Boston Red Sox 4, New York Yankees 1 in Boston – The Red Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and Rick Porcello limited the Yankees to just one hit the entire evening.

Texas Rangers 11, Baltimore Orioles 3 in Texas – As has been their theme lately, the Rangers used a big inning to propel to victory, this time a 7-run 4th inning with three home runs in the inning.

Milwaukee Brewers 5, Colorado Rockies 3 in Milwaukee – Down 3-2 entering the bottom of the 9th inning, the Milwaukee Brewers walked off on the Rockies on an Eric Thames home run.

Minnesota Twins 6, Kansas City Royals 4 in Minnesota – The Twins jumped out early, and each time the Royals tried to respond, they’d add on more runs. The Twins bullpen had four tremendous performances to help seal the win.

Arizona Diamondbacks 6, San Francisco Giants 4 in Arizona – The Diamondbacks jumped out hard on Giants starter Chris Stratton, scoring 5 runs in the first inning, and coasted to a victory Friday night over the Giants.

Oakland Athletics 1, Detroit Tigers 0, 13 innings in Oakland – After brilliant pitching and defense all around, it was a shame that someone had to lose the game between the A’s and Tigers on Friday night, but the A’s finally broke through in the bottom of the 13th inning for the win.

Houston Astros 2, Los Angeles Dodgers 1 in Los Angeles – After the Dodgers had a crazy offensive game on Thursday, Friday night the plan was to get to Justin Verlander early, and the Dodgers did, scoring in the first inning. That would be the only run Verlander would give up, however, and his Astros teammates would back him with a pair in the top of the 2nd and then let him close down the game.

Toronto Blue Jays 7, Seattle Mariners 2 in Seattle – “Toronto West” or “Toronto South”, depending on who you ask, was in full force on Friday, as the Jays fans in Seattle were incredibly loud in support of their team, and the Jays gave them plenty to cheer about in a game that really held down the Mariners offense completely until the 9th inning.

Pittsburgh Pirates 7, St. Louis Cardinals 6 in Pittsburgh – The Pirates gave great support to Chris Archer, and he had a solid start through four innings of his first game with the club, but he fell apart in the 5th inning, and the Pirates needed an 8th inning run to pull out the win.

Top Pitcher

Big moments often bring out odd heroes, and few would have expected that the guy to step forward in Friday’s Yankees/Red Sox game would have been Rick Porcello, but there he was, allowing a solo home run as the only baserunner he allowed all night, tossing a complete game, striking out 9 Yankee hitters.

Top Hitter

He’s not been cleared for the mound yet, but Shohei Ohtani is showing what made him so special even if he was “just” a hitter, as he crushed two home runs in a 4-5 night for the Los Angeles Angels, scoring and driving in 3 runs each, and even stealing a base on the night.

Today’s Game to Watch

Nathan Eovaldi has been on one side of the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry. On Saturday, he takes the mound for the first time as a member of the Boston Red Sox in the rivalry as the BoSox host the Bronx Bombers in a 4:05 pm Eastern tilt.
