Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager will have surgery on his left hip today

Already out for the season due to Tommy John surgery, Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager announced through the team that he would be having hip surgery Tuesday that will keep him from baseball activities for the rest of 2018.

When the star Dodgers shortstop went down with an elbow injury at the end of April, there was some hope that Seager could be healthy enough to swing a bat in the postseason and possibly DH, but those thoughts were put to bed with Monday night’s announcement.

Seager had been dealing with some issues in his hips before the elbow injury, so this is not entirely by surprise, but it adds another layer of recovery for a young player that the Dodgers certainly would like to base a lot of their franchise’s future on, right as he heads into his first arbitration season this offseason.

More from Los Angeles Dodgers

Seager has been one of the best shortstops in baseball since breaking into the league in 2015, part of a dynamic young generation of shortstops coming into the game. Only a fellow member of those young shortstops, Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor put up more fWAR from 2015-2017 than Seager.

Of course, this will add to the already-present question about Seager’s future position with the Dodgers. Built strong in his 6’4″ frame, there have long been rumors that the Dodgers would eventually need to move Seager to third base. Now, with an injury to his elbow along with these hip issues, a move across the keystone to 2B may make a better fit.

dark. Next. Dodgers break out of slump all at once

This will all be very intriguing as the Los Angeles Dodgers enter an offseason where they’ve cleared some space that could be used on a host of free agents in the market, whether it would be retaining one their mid-season acquisitions Manny Machado or Brian Dozier, or pursuing another option. Seager’s health could play into that decision.
