Oakland Athletics: Mike Fiers is now enemy number one on Yankees Twitter
Mike Fiers was recently acquired by the Oakland Athletics, but something else has caused his name to enter the headlines throughout the MLB. That something else is a Tweet by a fan that he decided to “like” on Twitter that has drawn the ire of Yankees fans.
Back in September of 2014, Mike Fiers hit Giancarlo Stanton with an 88-mph fastball. Unfortunately, the pitch hit Stanton in his jaw which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2014 season due to facial fractures and dental damage.
Although this was far from intentional by Fiers, Stanton has since worn a protective guard over his jaw each time he comes up to bat. As this is most likely always in the back of Stanton’s mind during every plate appearance, something else, unfortunately, happened when the two faced off again during the 2018 season.
In the third inning of a game in June of this year between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, Stanton was hit by a 90-mph fastball that came up and in on the 2017 National League MVP.
Understandably, Stanton looked out to the mound after tossing his bat away. Instead of leaving it alone, Fiers decided to put his hands out as if he was not understanding why Stanton took offense to the pitch. This caused the two to exchange words as Stanton went to first base, but the situation did not escalate further from there at that moment.
Much like 2014, this pitch was definitely not intentional by Fiers as he just missed with location. However, when you previously cause a very significant injury by throwing up and in, you have to understand why that player would be upset about being thrown at again, regardless of the intention.
Later in that same game, Stanton hit a 74 mph curveball 456 feet into the left field seats. After hitting the ball 114.9 mph, he tossed his bat away to make a statement, but Fiers had his back turned. When Stanton crossed home plate, he pointed out at Fiers to make sure he was aware of the revenge he took with the monster home run.
After the game, according to Catherine Slonksnis of MLB.com, the two players had additional comments about the situation:
“I understand … but the way he handled it, I think it was kind of childish,” Fiers said. “Anybody knows I’m not throwing at him. He’s going to act how he’s going to act. It kind of shows his character, because obviously I wasn’t throwing at him. The pitch was in. If I could throw a pitch anywhere I wanted every time, I’d probably be one of the best pitchers in this game. I have to throw in, I have to throw up, I have to throw it everywhere to keep these guys from making good contact.”
“I’m not trying to stir this up, that just is what it is, obviously,” Stanton said. “Anything like that that happens, no matter how many years it is, I’m not going to be happy. I’m not going to just walk to first and be OK, but it is what it is.”
Based on these comments, the two were not completely over the situation, but we have not heard about it again since that night in June. Fiers decided to change that by an action he took on Twitter shortly after becoming a member of the Oakland Athletics.

After a fan made a comment that he should hit Stanton in the mouth, Fiers decided to “like” the comment on Twitter. This has understandably caused a lot of outrage on Yankees Twitter. The outrage has also led to a lot of fans to be blocked by Fiers on Twitter.
Although it is understandable of Fiers to be frustrated with the situation as he did not intentionally hit Stanton with either pitch, Fiers has to understand why Stanton would be upset. The images of Stanton’s 2014 injury are horrifying, so it would make sense for Fiers to leave the situation alone and let Stanton enjoy some non-violent revenge through a monster home run.
However, after calling Stanton childish after the game and recently stirring up drama on Twitter, Fiers definitely seems to still be upset about the situation. As it will be hard for Fiers to claim he liked the Tweet by accident after blocking people, including Yankees reporters, and liking additional Tweets about the situation, will the MLB step in and take any action? After all, head injuries are very serious and should not be joked about on Twitter, specifically by other MLB players.
