At Call to the Pen, we want to ensure every MLB team is getting coverage, and that you’re well-informed as the reader! As part of that, we have brought back our daily piece into our collection with all of the night’s scores in the major leagues, the top performers in the minors, the minor league schedules, and a bit of history/birthdays at the very end.
Without further adieu, let’s begin!
Last night’s MLB Scores
New York Mets 6, Cincinnati Reds 4 in New York – The Mets struck first and were able to hold the Reds to just one 4-run outburst in the 7th inning as the Mets offense was able to attack with 16 hits.
Cleveland Indians 10, Minnesota Twins 0 in Cleveland – If the Twins had any ideas of jumping back into competition after sweeping the Royals over the weekend, the Indians snapped that right back as Trevor Bauer struck out 11 over 6 innings.
Miami Marlins 2, St. Louis Cardinals 1 in Miami – The Miami Marlins were able to shut down the Cardinals until the 9th inning, coming away with a home win on Monday.
Seattle Mariners 4, Texas Rangers 3, 12 innings in Texas – The Mariners used the tremendous bullpen depth they built up over the trade deadline well in outlasting the Mariners.
New York Yankees 7, Chicago White Sox 0 in Chicago – The Yankees got an incredible first start in pinstripes from Lance Lynn as Gleyber Torres and Neil Walker each homered.
Chicago Cubs 3, Kansas City Royals 1 in Kansas City – The Cubs got a tremendous start out of Cole Hamels and Javy Baez hit a double and a home run.
Colorado Rockies 2, Pittsburgh Pirates 0 in Colorado – A pitching matchup between two dynamic young arms was not what most would expect out of a night in Colorado, but that’s what they got as Joe Musgrove and Kyle Freeland each tossed 7 innings.
Arizona Diamondbacks 3, Philadelphia Phillies 2, 14 innings in Arizona – David Peralta capped off an incredible Diamondbacks comeback with his second home run of the game in the 14th inning after the Diamondbacks came back from down 2-0 in the bottom of the 9th inning to win.
Los Angeles Angels 6, Detroit Tigers 2 in Los Angeles – The Tigers scored in the top of the first, but the Angels offense was able to put together 4 innings where they scored en route to a 6-2 win.
Houston Astros 3, San Francisco Giants 1 in San Francisco – The Giants had a 1-0 lead going into the 9th, but the Astros got a 3-run home run from Marwin Gonzalez in the top of the 9th to win the game.
Top Pitcher
Making his first start for the Yankees since being acquired just ahead of the July 31st deadline, Lance Lynn had his best start of the year, tossing 7 1/3 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and a walk, striking out 9.
Top Hitter
David Peralta was the catalyst for the Diamondbacks comeback on Monday night, hitting a home run in the 9th inning as the Diamondbacks scored 2 runs to tie the game, and then he knocked out a second home run to end the game in the 14th inning. He finished the night 4-7 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI with a double and two home runs.
Today’s Game to Watch
The Braves and Nationals square off for a doubleheader that could really boost the Nationals back into the race or knock them out of the race altogether. Sean Newcomb takes the hill in the first game for the Braves, and he’s struggled in two starts against the Nationals this year, so he will be looking for redemption.
