New York Mets David Wright to begin rehab assignment
Don’t look know, but there is going to be a David Wright sighting in St. Lucie, as the New York Mets third baseman will begin a rehab assignment.
May 27, 2016. That was the last time that David Wright suited up for the New York Mets, as a litany of injuries have derailed what was a possible Hall of Fame career. He did come back for three games with the St. Lucie Mets in 2017, but those injuries appeared once again, ending his season before it really began.
Now, nearly two and a half years since his last major league appearance, Wright is once again attempting to return to the majors. He will begin another rehab assignment on Sunday, returning to St. Lucie to try to work his way back into the lineup.

At this point, it is difficult to know what, if anything, Wright could provide to the Mets. He has played just 75 major league games since the end of 2014, and in that time, produced a .260/.365/.436 batting line, hitting 12 homers and 15 doubles in 338 plate appearances. That performance, if Wright can be healthy and replicate it, would help the Mets come 2019.
However, he has not seen game action at any level since 2016, those three games in 2017 aside. It will take some time for Wright to be ready to play in the majors, although he could be ready come September. If nothing else, activating Wright, and getting him a few at bats over the final month of the season, would be a way to get fans into Citi Field.
In reality, this is more of a look for 2019. The Mets are planning on contending next year, despite their atrocious showing in 2018. With Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and a resurgent Zack Wheeler, the Mets rotation should be fine, although the offense and bullpen need work. If Wright can even be close to the player he was over his last 75 major league games, the Mets will have an upgrade in the lineup. Of course, that is a gargantuan “if.”
David Wright is once again beginning his long road back for the New York Mets. Maybe this time, he can find his way back to the majors.
