The San Diego Padres have a ton of young talent coming up in the pipeline. Should they keep Freddy Galvis next season?

The San Diego Padres have done a great job of building up their farm system in recent years. When you look at every publication, their farm system is at the top of the rankings. One of their top prospects is Fernando Tatis Jr., who plays shortstop, although he is out for the season.

The San Diego Padres are facing a looming 40-man roster crunch. That’s why Tyson Ross and Jordan Lyles were waived for nothing. That’s why pitchers like Jacob Nix and Brett Kennedy are being looked at down the stretch.

This begs the question, should the club re-sign Freddy Galvis this off-season?

"“We love Freddy, love him in a Padres uniform,” said manager Andy Green. “All of that stuff will take care of itself in due time. But as a manager, I absolutely love having him on the club.”"

Galvis’ production has dropped in his move to San Diego this season. After posting a .255 average with a .690 OPS, 12 homers and 61 RBI last season, this year he’s hitting .235 with a .641 OPS seven homers and 44 RBI.

Among shortstops, Galvis ranks 22nd in WAR , though his seven DRS rank seven among all shortstops per Fangraphs. For a team that is lacking offensive punch in a few spots, and has a young pitching staff, a good fielding shortstop that lacks offensive punch puts them in a tricky spot.

If they wanted to tap into free agent market, Galvis may be their best option. Manny Machado won’t sign there and the rest of the free agent class consists of guys like Jordy Mercer, Jose Iglesias and Alcides Escobar, which wouldn’t exactly be upgrades.

Tatis Jr. may not be ready right away next year, so re-signing Galvis for next year may not be the worst idea for the club
