Cleveland Indians: Stress fracture sends Trevor Bauer to the DL
The Cleveland Indians received unfortunate news today as Trevor Bauer is headed to the 10-day disabled list with a stress fracture. We have the details.
According to a tweet from Jordan Bastian on MLB.com, Cleveland Indians Trevor Bauer has been placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a stress fracture in his right fibula.
Indians manager Terry Francona labeled the injury as a “small stress fracture,” but there is not currently a timetable for Bauer’s return to the rotation.
Bauer is establishing himself as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, so this is a large loss for the Indians pitching staff. Through 166.0 innings pitched, Bauer holds a 2.22 ERA, a 2.38 FIP, and a 1.090 WHIP. He has also compiled a 12-6 record through his 25 starts on the season.

The Indians are in a fortunate situation in the American League Central Division as they currently hold a 12.5 game lead over the second place Minnesota Twins. Due to this, the team can be patient with Bauer throughout his recovery as they are not in danger of missing out on the postseason.
Despite their lead in the division, we are inching very close to the playoffs, so the team has to be concerned about Bauer’s postseason availability after this unfortunate news.
Recently, Sean Doolittle of the Washington Nationals suffered a stress reaction in his left foot and baseball-reference estimates that he will be out for multiple weeks. If Bauer ends up with a similar timeline, he could return to the Indians rotation in September. This would allow the team to ease him back into the rotation and get him ready to go for the postseason.
Bauer and Corey Kluber are quite the one-two punch when healthy, so they will definitely be feared by any opposing postseason foe. The ability for the team to be patient with Bauer should allow them to get him back at full health prior to the start of the postseason. However, as setbacks can always occur, this news has to make the organization nervous as Bauer is a huge piece of the puzzle to Cleveland having success in the postseason.
