The Chicago Cubs needs to stop trying to make Yu Darvish happen in 2018. It’s just not going to happen.

When the Chicago Cubs signed Yu Darvish to a six year contract worth $126 million, they were hoping to get another top of the rotation starter. Jake Arrieta had turned down the Cubs offer, leading the front office to add Darvish as a replacement. However, that move has not gone according to plan, as Darvish has struggled to a 4.95 ERA and a 1.425 WHiP.

To make matters worse, he has been dealing with injuries virtually all season. Darvish has not been on a major league mound since May 20, but had once again taken a step forwardin his rehab, heading to South Bend to work his way back to the majors. That start did not go as planned, as Darvish left after warming up for the second inning.

The problem? Darvish felt the same pain that he had last time he attempted to make a rehab start, leading him to want another MRI on his arm. Perhaps this time, they will find the cause of the pain that Darvish has been feeling in his elbow and triceps, and can find a way to keep the pain from returning.

Even if the cause of such problems can be found, Darvish may not have time to offer the Cubs much this season. While Chicago does need help in the rotation, he will need to embark on another rehab assignment, working his way back into shape. Chances are, Darvish will need three to four weeks, and as the season is rapidly coming to an end, that does not leave him much time to get ready.

At this point, the Cubs need to take a long term view with their high priced free agent signing. While the Cubs are eyeing another championship, they are also looking at winning over the next few years. Shutting Darvish down, and making sure that he is ready for the start of the 2019 campaign, will help get to that goal. Perhaps then, they will be able to salvage some value from his contract.

Yu Darvish may need to be shut down again. With the Chicago Cubs long term goals, it makes sense to get him healthy for 2019, instead of trying to rush him to pitch this season.
