When the Minnesota Twins acquired Logan Forsythe from the Los Angeles Dodgers in July, it was seen as a financial deal only for a player that’d be gone after 2018. Could Forsythe end up bringing back even more value for the Twins?

Minnesota Twins fans were not pleased to see one of the prime faces of the franchise, Brian Dozier, traded away to the Los Angeles Dodgers just ahead of the July non-waiver trade deadline. However, bringing back Logan Forsythe as part of the deal and not getting one of the “name” prospects from Los Angeles really seemed to fire up the team’s fan base.

Many fans wondered why the Minnesota Twins would be interested in a player who had hit .207/.270/.290 for the Dodgers on the year with just 2 home runs and not over a small sample – it was over 70 games! This was not some sort of new issue either. He hadn’t hit with the Dodgers at all since being acquired before the 2017 season, hitting .224/.351/.327 in 2017 with 6 home runs.

More from Call to the Pen

Forsythe was known to be a salary dump for the Dodgers in the deal, as they were near the luxury cap and could not afford to bring on Dozier without trimming away the remainder of Forsythe’s $9 million salary.

Rather than coming to the Minnesota Twins and becoming a useless money sink on the bench that many fans predicted that he would be, Forsythe really embraced the young Twins and being back in the American League. He took over Dozier’s second base position, and his bat completely came alive.

Forsythe doesn’t offer big home run power or incredible base running speed, but his line-drive stroke came alive with the Twins, and in 20 games with the Minnesota Twins, he’s put up a .370/.425/.425 line, smacking 4 doubles, and he has collected a hit in 15 of those 20 games, including 8 multi-hit games.

dark. Next. Gonsalves debut not what Twins fans hoped

With the news that Forsythe has cleared revocable trade waivers, the Minnesota Twins will have a busy week of fielding offers on the impending free agent, and they could end up gaining even more value from their Dozier deal than they ever imagined!
