Luggage has become a menace around professional baseball, with Kansas City Royals prospect Seuly Matias becoming the latest player to be felled by a suitcase.

Oh, the dreaded suitcase. It has been the foil of a number of major league players, from Dennis Martinez to Rick Aguilera to Jonathan Lucroy. At the start of 2018, a suitcase felled Kansas City Royals All Star Salvador Perez, and later in the year, Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez was also taken out of action by his luggage.

The Vengeance of the Valise continued to come after the Royals. This time, it was top prospect Seuly Matias who felt the wrath of his luggage, slicing his thumb open as he tried to get his suitcase aboard the team bus.

Granted, missing the rest of the season means that Matias will be out for a couple of weeks, but this is not how the Royals wanted to see his season end. One of the Royals top prospects entering the season, Matias saw his stock skyrocket. His .231/.303/.531 batting line may not grab the eye, but he did hit 31 homers in 376 plate appearances, an impressive number for any player, let alone a 19 year old getting his first taste of full season ball.

While that power will grab attention, there is still a question as to wheat Matias is. Will he become a viable building block for Kansas City, a middle of the order power bat that can strike fear into the opposition? Or will he become a Three True Outcome type of player, the Royals version of a Joey Gallo?

Fortunately, with the timing of the injury, Matias will have plenty of time to heal up. He should, barring any unforeseen complications, be ready for Spring Training, and be set to continue his ascension through the Royals system. With each ball that is sent over the fence, he will be that much closer to taking his place as a key part of the rebuild. At least, if he can avoid being taken out by his luggage.
