Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams has been seemingly adopted into another franchise, or at least he’s claiming another one!

The work that Trevor Williams has been doing this year on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates should be making him a more household name in his own right, as he’s used a tremendous second half to boost his season numbers to a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 49/102 BB/K over 148 2/3 innings on the season. However, it’s the recent flirting with the NFL that has caught some attention.

You see, Trevor Williams is not the only Trevor Williams in professional sports. He is, however, the only one who has an active Twitter account, which means that Pirates righty Trevor Williams receives plenty of comments/questions/trolling intended for Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Trevor Williams, who does not have a Twitter account.

To help combat this, Williams got himself a Chargers jersey with the number of the cornerback and declared himself available for questions for the L.A. defensive back:

More from Call to the Pen

He even took the time to run through some NFL workouts supervised by Pirates strength and conditioning coach Jim Malone with fellow Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers Steven Brault and Joe Musgrove watching and criticizing. They had plenty to criticize as, well, Pittsburgh Pirates righty Trevor should stick to his mound work.

With the NFL kicking off today, MLB players are certainly aware, many tweeting out support of their favorite teams. Few get to tweet out support of a player who happens to share the same name.

Apparently, even though he doesn’t have Twitter, the Chargers DB got the message and also supported his fellow namesake:

Now that’s just flat-out brilliant!!

dark. Next. Williams pitching like Pirates ace

So while most of the Pittsburgh Pirates fans will be worried about how their hometown Steelers do as they travel to Cleveland to open the season against the Browns, certainly Trevor Williams will have an eye on how the Los Angeles Chargers do as they host the Kansas City Chiefs, specifically a particular defensive back!
