Who said baseball cards are just for baseball players? The St. Louis Cardinals Rally Squirrel has a card of its own.

Stan Musial. Red Schoendienst. Bob Gibson. Yadier Molina. Rogers Hornsby. Ozzie Smith. These are some of the St. Louis Cardinals legends, players whose skill on the diamond made them beloved by the hometown fans. They shall live on forever, immortalized by tales of their dazzling ability.

Yet, they are hardly the only beings that made an impact on the diamond. Proving that the ability to change a game does not know any species lines, the Rally Squirrel has become a beloved icon in its own right. After all, from its debut on October 5, 2011, when it appeared against the Phillies and helped push the Cardinals to a World Series victory that year, to the present day, the Rally Squirrel has been a key part of the team’s success.

Finally, this icon has been granted its own baseball card. Topps Now created a card for the Rally Squirrel, showing it hustling down the line to bring joy, and victory, to the Cardinals faithful. The squirrel is there, captured in living colour, for the world to marvel at.

Of course, this is not the first time the Rally Squirrel has been been immortalized on cardboard. It was prominently featured on a card that was, in theory, supposed to depict Skip Schumaker. Instead, the squirrel once again stole the show, featured on the card with only Schumaker’s leg visible to let anyone know who the player was.

The squirrel had faded to obscurity after 2011, being all but forgotten. Generic stuffed squirrels were still sold at Busch Stadium, but the fervor had gone away. The Rally Squirrel was eclipsed by other imitations, like the Rally Cat or the rather odd Rally Mantis. Squirrels? They were passe after just a couple of years.

And now, the Rally Squirrel is back with a vengeance. Once again, the fuzzy harbinger of glad tidings has returned at a critical point in the schedule, as the Cardinals are fighting for a postseason berth. If this victory proves to be the difference, the squirrel may never be forgotten again.

Another St. louis Cardinals icon is getting their own baseball card. It’s time the Rally Squirrel got his own Topps card.
