New York Yankees

Yeah, the Evil Empire would be a team definitely after Bumgarner, which should not make anyone surprised. This offseason, the Yankees will see CC Sabathia, J.A. Happ, and Lance Lynn leave in free agency. There will be a rotation spot or two open in the Bronx.

The Yankees have a number of pitchers close to the majors that could factor into their rotation, but that’s nothing like what Madison Bumgarner could bring to their rotation.

The biggest issues for the New York Yankees will be two-fold. First, the team will be after the big bats hitting the free agent market this offseason, and with their payroll right up to the luxury cap, bringing in Bumgarner could be an issue.

The second issue is that the San Francisco Giants will be looking for a transformative deal. The Yankees have not sent that sort of prospect package in any deal, tending to hold their top players close to the vest in their deals and dealing more from their depth rather than the top of their system.

One of the things the Yankees could do in order to sway the San Francisco Giants to the table is to put outfielder Clint Frazier on the table. The Yankees don’t have room for Frazier, while the Giants have a significant need for outfielders at the big league level.

With the chance to sign a guy for a number of years versus having Bumgarner for just one year through a big player trade, it’s likely the Yankees step away.
