If Jay and Silent Bob were to take one look at Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon McCarthy’s career statistics, they would approve.

Back in August, in a relatively under the radar announcement, Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon McCarthy announced that he would retire at the end of the 2018 campaign. He had been sidelined since June  with tendinitis in his right knee, but was attempting to work his way back to pitch for the Braves in the bullpen down the stretch.

However, he just could not get ready in time. Yesterday, the Braves were forced to admit that McCarthy would not be coming back, as they have run out of time for him to get back into game shape. McCarthy’s career has come to an end.

If there is a silver lining to this, it comes from McCarthy’s career numbers. Over his 13 year career, McCarthy posted a 69-75 record with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.300 WHiP, striking out 908 batters with only 323 walks in his 1223.2 innings. Yes, 69 wins and a 4.20 ERA. Somewhere, Jay and Silent Bob are jumping around for joy at these very nice totals.

It is also fitting that McCarthy would end his career with such totals. He and his wife are both active, and rather hilarious, on Twitter, a platform that would truly appreciate such numbers. Although, to be fair, most of the internet would find those numbers particularly humourous.

It is also possible that McCarthy will end his career on a high note. While he may not be part of the Braves postseason roster, it appears more and more likely that Atlanta will reach the playoffs. With a bit of luck, and a long run through the playoffs, McCarthy could end up getting a World Series ring. As it was, he only made one playoff appearance, a loss for the Dodgers last year in the World Series.
