San Francisco Giants: Bobby Evans out as general manager
As the 2018 season draws to a close, changes will be made within organizations all across MLB and the San Francisco Giants have already made a move.
Earlier today, the San Francisco Giants decided to part ways with general manager Bobby Evans. Hired following the 2015 season, Evans has been at the helm of a precipitous fall for one of the more successful franchises over the last decade.
The Giants have been the envy of the National League having won three World Series titles since the 2010 season. Although Evans was involved with the success of those teams, former GM Brian Sabean was the man in charge for all three of those championships.
Evans served as assistant general manager during that time and played a role in building a perennial World Series contender in the Bay Area. However, the team has been on a downward spiral since Evans took over the main job heading into the 2016 season.
The San Francisco Giants managed to win just 64 games last season following a playoff berth in 2016. Although the MLB roster had become one of the oldest in baseball, Evans decided to double down and add more veteran pieces heading into this season.

The Giants traded for former All-Stars Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen during the offseason with an eye toward a playoff push this year. Things haven’t gone according to plan for the team during this season. Although Longoria has a chance to help this team over the next few years, these are the types of moves that have hampered Evans during his time in San Francisco.
He has handed out big contracts to free agents like Jeff Samardzija, Johnny Cueto, and Mark Melancon that have paid little to no dividends. Coupled with his questionable acquisitions of Longoria and McCutchen this team is void of top-end talent in the Minor Leagues.
However, Evans time with the organization is not coming to a close. It is widely speculated that he will be reassigned within the organization he has spent the past two decades working for. Sabean, possibly one of the top GM’s in baseball over the last few decades, will assist in finding Evans replacement and isn’t expected to step back into the role that he thrived in.
These next few seasons in the Bay Area could be hard for fans to stomach with the current construction of the Major League roster. However, in a market the size of San Francisco, it shouldn’t be long before they’re back knocking on the door of the playoffs.
