The Colorado Rockies probably wouldn’t be doing as well if not for Trevor Story. He turned things around this year after a not so great sophomore season.

In 2016, Trevor Story was a star. He came to the big leagues and started hitting home runs left and right for the Colorado Rockies. Then 2017 came and while his season-long numbers were better, he just wasn’t as great.

Now we’re looking at what could easily be the best season of his career and maybe it can result in an award, specifically the Comeback Player award.

Normally the award is given to players who had an improvement over a bad year. You know, a player does really bad one year and then great another. Or he misses most of the year due to injury and then comes back on fire.

Story doesn’t have either of those scenarios. He played pretty much the whole season in 2017 and was pretty good, but his 2018 campaign is simply so much better.

Let’s look at some of his main categories. In 2017 through 145 games, he hit .239 with 24 home runs, 82 runs batted in, 68 runs scored, and seven stolen bases. Entering Tuesday, his 2018 numbers have been so much better. Through 150 games, he hit .289 with 33 home runs, 102 runs batted in, 82 runs scored, and 26 stolen bases.

His average jumped by 50 points and could end up being a career high. His 102 RBI’s is the 4th most in the national league, and his 26 stolen bases are nearly twice as many as he racked up between 2016 and 2017.

When you take into account his league-leading 191 strikeouts in 2017, his season looked more like a Chris Davis season than what he did during his rookie year.

More from Colorado Rockies

With just a couple games left this season, Story has nearly 30 fewer strikeouts despite having 70 more at-bats.

The biggest difference is when you take a look at his WAR. According to FanGraphs, his 2018 WAR currently stands at 4.6, 3.3 points higher than his 2017 WAR. He has one of the 12 best WAR totals among NL hitters and 6th in all of baseball among full-time shortstops.

He’s definitely far better than he was last year and it looks like he might even get better. As a result, it’s only fair for his name to get mentioned for the award. It wouldn’t even be all that difficult for him to win as there’s only one other real competitor in the league.

Next. Trevor Story becomes first SS to do this!. dark

Story would only have to go up against the Mets Zack Wheeler, who has been putting up his own amazing season, but if Story can put on a show during these final few days, it could very well be his award to take for the Colorado Rockies.
